E-mails sent from inside Dynamics GP include the sender's local TEMP path in the file name

Posted on by 3,141

We have a client experiencing a problem when sending e-mails from Dynamics GP 2013 (12.00.1412 SP1) to their customer where the local path of the e-mail is included in the file name received by the customer.  (For example, RET123.pdf is received as C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Temp\RET123.pdf.)  This happens with both PDFs sent with SEND TO form Screen Output and through Word Templates.  If I print the Word Template to Word and e-mail from Word 2013, the path is not included.  Is there a setting somewhere in GP where we can control the path of the attachment?  (I know from https://community.dynamics.com/gp/f/32/p/68595/125246.aspx that we can't change the name of the attachment from inside GP.)  Note that this is only a problem with web e-mail recipients.  (If I send myself an e-mail from their GP, my desktop Outlook hides the path, but if I look at it online with Office 365, the path is there.  The customer is reading these e-mails with online Exchange.  Telling them to open the e-mails in desktop Outlook isn't an option as the e-mails are being auto-processed and imported as part of the customer's EDI routine.)

    Hi Lisa,

is it possible to change (Company_InvoiceINV0000123.pdf) to (InvoiceINV0000123.pdf) and remove Company_ infront of the document number?

    THanks

It is great to hear from you, Lisa!

The problem was never resolved because we ended up working around it and incorporating it into another project where we ended up sending the customer SSRS reports that they can use to import into their system instead of PDF versions.  (The path was an issue in this situation because the customer was using the PDFs to strip out data to upload into their system.  SSRS was a better long-term solution since we also were able to schedule the reports to run over night.)

Your comment about MAPI / Exchange setting change sounds like the root cause (and not directly GP) as the client was on MAPI at the time.  (We never looked at it again and they have since moved to Exchange as part of their upgrade to GP 2018.)

Lisa, were you able to get this resolved so the sender's local folder path doesn't appear within the attachment file name?  I am seeing it in GP 2016 R2.  Interestingly, when double-clicking to open the attachment, it has a different name (Company_InvoiceINV0000123.pdf).

Side note - this started happening when we changed the E-mail setting from Exchange to MAPI.

Excellent!  I would appreciate receiving the screenshot (lisa at aonc dot com).  I'll recommend the client upgrade and hope that it solves the problem.

    Thank you, Alma!

Before I suggest the client update to R2, could you confirm for me that you opened the sent e-mail from a web-based e-mail application like Office365 or Exchange Online?  I hadn't been able to find any reference to this on the Fix List for GP 2013 R2 so I want to make sure that your test was similar to what we are seeing.

Lisa, No, there is no setting in GP from where you can control attachment path? When we print report on screen, it actually gets created in temp folder of login user profile and then on press 'Send Email' button GP provide that path to attaché report from the path.

May be issue is with GP2013 SP1 as I checked it and it's working great with GP2013 SP2, on both my desktop outlook and online office 365 shows correct report name without complete path. Maybe when attaching report on Send Email button in Gp2013 sp1, somehow whole path get included with report name.

    Hi Jonathan --

Thank you for your reply!  Regarding your questions:

    >>did you set "embed documents in message body"

No, as the customer requires the documents be sent as PDF attachments.

    >>did you set ... "send documents as attachment"

Yes, and it is working perfectly when I receive them to a desktop e-mail (Outlook) client.

    >>have you (correctly) installed the component ".NET Programmability Support"?

I do not understand what you are referring to with this question.  I also don't see it mentioned in the GP 2010 link you sent.  (The client is on GP 2013 but the document is still mostly relevant.)  I believe .NET is installed as part of the bootstrapper installation in GP.  (Reminder:  The problem with the path happens with both the SendTo: and the Template features in GP 2013 when the recipient uses a web-based client.  Everything is fine on a desktop-based client.)

Do you have a link/detail on what the component ".NET Programmability Support"?

    hi,

did you set "embed documents in message body" and "send documents as attachment" in  setup page "company email setup"? also check "vendor email options".

have you (correctly) installed the component ".NET Programmability Support"?
