Is it possible to search for an entity using a field from a form?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to know if in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations it’s possible to search for an entity using a field that already exists on a form.

For example, if I’m on a form where a specific field is available (such as a customer account number, an item code, etc.), can that same field be used as a search criterion to locate the related entity?

If so, what’s the correct way to achieve this?

  •

Can it be done directly from the form using Advanced filter and sort?

  •

Or would it require some additional configuration, like customizing the data entity?

  •

Thanks in advance for any guidance or examples.

    Hi Sergio,

I'm not sure what exactly you are asking here. The Advanced filter and sort is not having information about data entities. When I first read "I'm on a form" and then you ask about customizing the data entity, that is the place where I get lost in understanding your question. A customization on a data entity has no relation with a form field. Can you please elaborate and/or share screenshots to illustrate your question?

Once you are on a form, you can see the related entities using the Office Icon on the top-right side.

Once you have list of those data entities that are available on the form, you can proceed to the next step, which is taking the name of data entity and search in the entities list, and further going into details of that entity that would should you the fields.

    Hi,

You cant say that from the application itself.

I would do it the following way. It may need to search a bit, but you should be still fine. The alternative would be to check with a developer who can check it in Visual Studio.

Go to the desired page, here all customers and open in excel.

The entity name is already in the downloaded file name, however, you can also check the design in the data connector, where you will find the entity data source.

From here you can check all the available fields for this entity, either under available fields or selected fields.

If you dont find the desired field, you can add table and check available entities. This is what I mean you may have to search a bit. However, if you are looking for some customer data, the entity will most like have customer in its name.

    Kind regards, Adis

Navigate to AOT > Forms, open the required form field, and check its references. There is 'DataEntity' section, you’ll be able to find if this field is used in Data Entity.
