D365 F&O supported Visual Studio version

Hello all,

Which editions and versions of Visual Studio are supported for Dynamics 365? I looked at the system requirement documentation and did not find a listing for required development tools support.

I am beginning the code upgrade analysis and I want to know what specific version of VS I can/should use to open the Upgraded Metadata project produced by the code upgrade analysis tool in LCS.

Additionally, by April 2021 we will be deprecating support for Visual Studio 2015. New VMs for PU37/10.0.13 as well as the downloadable VHD that will be released for the October release (which is PU37/10.0.13) will have .NET 4.7.2 as well as Visual Studio 2017. This means by April 2021 we will require everyone to have deployed a new VM with VS2017, to be ready for the April release that will no longer have support for VS2015.

Reason for deprecation/removal To support the latest versions of Visual Studio, some changes have to be made to the X++ extensions for Visual Studio. These changes are incompatible with Visual Studio 2015.
Replaced by another feature? Visual Studio 2017 will replace Visual Studio 2015 as the deployed and required version.

Status Virtual machines deployed on version 10.0.13 (Platform update 37) or later contain Visual Studio 2017. Version 10.0.16 (Platform update 40) is the final release with support for Visual Studio 2015. Virtual machines with only Visual Studio 2015 will not be able to update to version 10.0.17 (Platform update 41).

Can we still use Visual studio 2015 in 10.0.16 after April? We are in the midst of go-live and would not be upgrading environments to 10.0.17 until after Go-live .

Hi Alok,

Yes, you can still use Visual Studio 2015 in 10.0.16 after April. When you want to upgrade to 10.0.17 or higher, then at that time VS 2017 is required.
