Exporting Data for EDI transport

Hi

We have done loads of work integrating into Dynamics GP with EDI files of different formats and linking into web services.  Now we are starting to move focus to sending data from GP to other parties via electronic means (not an email Word template).  We want to be able to output an xml file or flat file as part of the print step or similar.

Has anyone done this level or work or could point us in the right direction for documentation on it?

Cheers

Heather

    Hi Heather,

In my previous manufacturing company I worked for we used EDI heavily. Initially they had a product integrated into GP from vSync, but over the time we found that way too limited and mostly every new setup or profile changes had to be done by their support team, which was very costly. We ended up to dump the product and look for something else. At that time (6-7 years ago) we selected Scribe to do the integration of EDI documents in and out of GP. There are easy ways to map the data format to match the different EDI document requirements (810, 820, 850, 856, etc..) for each of your EDI customers. I can't recall the details, but I suspect that nowadays you'd be able to achieve similar results still with Scribe or SmartConnect.

As you know, EDI has several different standards to work with, and mostly it's nothing else then comma delimited text files (unless you use newer XML formats). We worked together with a very knowledgeable EDI consultant that was also providing data services thru a partner network for EDI communication. That too saved a lot of $$$ compared to the big players we used before. EDI communication is a very competitive market and you better shop around to get the best deal. And whenever the customer allows for it, pull / send the data directly to him thru FTP, so you bypass the costly middle-man mailboxes (which charges on the kilobyte or characters sent/received)

Beat you have very good understanding and knowledge of EDI and it's working. why don't you write a blog post on it?  The information you provided in second para is very good, make it more easier  to understand for audience like me. :)
