Separating renewals from new business

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We have long contracts and do a steady business of renewals. Our Sales Manager wants our sales pipeline to reflect new business only, but we still need a way to track the renewals. Any suggestions for the best way to do this? My first idea was to set up a separate Business Process Flow, but I've no idea how to funnel that into a separate "Renewals" pipeline. Is there a better way?

Yes, I do see how. Thank you! This should be the easiest workaround.

Is there a way to filter the default Sales Pipeline, or do I need to create a new pipeline for each flag (new / renewal)?

Set up an Opportunity Type field with options of "New business" and "Renewal".  Make it mandatory.  Then make a view called "New Business Opps" an add a filter to only pull Opps with that NEw Business flag.  Then filter the sales pipeline dashboard by that new view.  Your sales manager will have everything they want, that way.

Step 1 would be to add a flag on whatever entities that you use within the Sales Pipeline called renewals and ensure it cascades down the line by ensuring the renewal flag is in the mappings between the various entities (Lead, Opportunity, Quote, Sales Order, Invoice).

Your sales manager can then simply filter out all records that are renewals by filtering on that flag..

If you need a  second business process flow for renewals you can switch to it once the "Is this a renewal question" has been asked...
