Unable to send e-mails to addresses outside of our network.

Up until today this was not a problem.  Suddenly, when users attempt to send e-mails from CRM web app to an e-mail address other than one used by our company (i.e. @yahoo, @gmail, @hotmail) the message fails to send.  CRM shows it as pending and the event log on the CRM server shows the following error:

System.Net.Mail.SmtpFailedRecipientException: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay

Again, this was not the situation yesterday.  All e-mails went through then.  It only happens when the recipient is outside of our network.  Any recipient inside our network receives the e-mail.

Any thoughts?  Thank you in advance.

    Check if relaying is enabled on mail server?

    You can check it through this:

    IIS > Default SMTP Server > Properties > Access > Authentication

    Access Control > Anonymous access - Checked

    Relay restrictions > Relay >

    Thank you for your prompt responses.  We are not using a default SMTP Server through IIS.  We set up the CRM E-mail router to communicate with our corporate exchange server.  From what I have been told, that server is set up for relay.

    Second Suggestion:

    Open the Exchange System Manager;

    Go in Administrative Groups -> Administrative group name -> Server -> Server name -> Protocols -> SMTP;

    Right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server -> properties;

    Access tab -> Relay button;

    Select "only the list bellow" and add your domain and\or IPs you do want to allow the relay

    and finally check  the "Allow all computers witch successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above" checkbox.

    1-  if all users in the organization are facing such a problem while using (OWA - Outlook POP - IMAP) then most likely its an exchange server settings that needs to be adjusted to either accept relays or for OWA to check the IIS and so on...

    2- if all users, or few in the same organization are facing the same problem only while using Outlook - POP - IMAP  and the OWA is working fine, then most likely it's an outlook settings.

    The primary reason I see for a returned error 571 and .NET framework response of outoing_network business_domain_mailing unavailable is that first, there is someone using your mailing_network with non authorized

    protocoles (IP connections, mail servers, non trusted domain accessibility and more...) over your net_domain_authorized. And second, some people over your business_network is using a non proper mailing_domain over Microsoft Technology and I can surely point at @gmail. As an advice, you should never let your employees using public_network_domain when we are talking of business_network administration.

    It appears that the email router server does not have the relay permissions to be able to relay emails through either SMTP or your exchange servers. Are you using Exchange server or any other SMTP servers?

    If you are using exchange 2007/2010, you will need to build the receive connector on the Exchange Hub Transport Server.
