Identifying user that made modifications

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Is it possible to determine what user last modified a particular window.  For example,  can I identify who made a change to the Customer Maintenance window?  I see that there is an Activity Tracking feature to track future activity.  But, can I get information on a change that has already happened?

    Yes, that's correct.

They were not using Activity Tracker.  So, there is no way of identifying which user made a change to the information in the window, Customer Maintenance, at this point.  Is that correct?  Thanks again.

    Hello Lee

If this is what you mean, then the Activity tracking is an option. Keep in mind that activating that will include all the master files; items, customers, vendors ...etc. This in turn imply high load on the server to process and log accordingly. Here is a good reference for Dynamics GP Activity Tracking

Another option is to consider what's called CDC as a database solution for tracking specific tables changes, here is an article on how to consider Audit Requirements for Dynamics GP- CDC

Please let us know if you have any further inquiries,

Hi.  Thanks!  I actually just mean changing the information.  For example, going into the Customer Maintenance window and changing the address of the customer.  Which in my testing the Activity Tracking will track.  Of course, if turned on.  But, my client would like to see what user made a change in that window after the fact.  They were not using the Activity Tracker.  I see the RM00101 has a modified date field.  But, I didn't see a field indicating a user.  I am thinking they cannot identify the user at this point.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.  Thanks.

Activity Tracking would have to be activated before the change, but wouldn't track modifications to a window regardless.  How many users do you have that can make window modifications?  It should be between 0-1.  This is a developer-level activity.

Are you talking about modifying forms in Dynamics GP ? If so, the activity tracking has nothing to do with such modifications, its purpose is to track files (modifications, additions or deletions applied on master files) , posting tracking, access tracking, login tracking ..etc

For forms modifications, there are several types such as VBA, modifier, dexterity ..etc, what is your case ?
