BOM Routing Links and MRP

Our Manufacturing process can take several months and we've therefore started utilizing BOM Routing Links to link our raw materials to specific sequences in our Routings. This allows us to better forecast (via MRP) when our raw materials are needed. MRP appears to use the BOM Routing Links to calculate the Planned Picks when looking at existing Manufacturing Orders. However, we want to use Sales Forecasting. When using Sales Forecasting, MRP is always setting the Planned Pick date as the planned release date on MO and ignores the BOM Routing Links.

For example:

The BOM for "FG001" has 1 Raw Material item ("RM001") and the Qty is 100

The Routing has 3 sequences,

 - SEQ 1 takes 30 days

 - SEQ 2 takes 90 days

 - SEQ 3 takes 30 days

using the BOM Routing Link we link RM001 to SEQ 3 which implies that we don't need to pick RM001 until 120 days after the release date of the MO

If we create an MO for 100 units of "FG001" with a release date of 07/01/2020 and regenerate MRP, the Planned Pick for RM001 is  10/29/2020 (120 days after the release date) - this appears correct.

If we create a Sales Forecast with "FG001" due on 11/01/2020 and regenerate MRP, the Planned Pick for RM001 is 06/04/2020, the planned released date of the Planned MO. This is incorrect because it is ignoring the BOM Routing Link.  The Planned Pick date should be 10/02/2020 which is 120 days after the planned release date.

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same. Not sure if this is a limitation in the calculation of MRP if I'm missing something in setup.

    BOM-Routing Link and MRP

    Hi:

A GP end user would like for the BOM-Routing Link to be utilized by MRP.

With MRP not utilizing this, the end user maintains that the Release Date shown in Pegging Inquiry for picklists (MPKs) and their bought items is not being calculated correctly.

What have some companies used, as a workaround for utilizing BOM-Routing Links with MRP to calculate Pegging Release Date?

    Thank you!

    John

is this question related to this identical topic ? community.dynamics.com/.../bom-routing-links-and-mrp

If so, they should be merged..

Yes, they're related.  But, I don't know how to merge them.

Is it possible from someone to answer both questions, if anything?

A routing is a group of operations, or steps, that must be done to assemble an item (such as "paint bike frame"-->"attach gear assembly"->"attach handlebars"). A bill of material (BOM) is the set of materials needed to complete each of the operations (paint, gears, handlebars).

Lewis - thanks. I can see that the BOM-Routing Links are being used by MRP for existing MOs. However, they don't appear to be used for Sales Orders, or Sales Forecasts.  I'm beginning to think this is simply how the MRP application was designed. My hope was that MRP would look at the Primary Routing but I think that is not the case? Would you agree?

RE: BOM Routing Links and MRP

More testing with BOM/Routing Links revealed the following:

    1. If I manually create an MO for my test FG item and build a Picklist, the required date for the component is consistent with what was set up in the BOM/Routing Link - required when the linked Sequence begins.

2 - If I set the Fulfillment Method of my test FG item to "Make to Order-Silent" and then create a Sales order, the MO is auto-created. On the pick list the required date of the component is the start date of the entire MO as opposed to what was defined in the BOM/Routing Link. If I rebuild the picklist then the BOM/Routing Link is used.

So - is that a bug or does anything think there is a setup option I'm somehow missing?
