(One!) Standard User Cannot Open Store Manager

My question: If a Windows 7 "Standard User" on one workstation can open Store Manager, why can't a "Standard User" on another machine open Manager? My understanding is that file sharing permission are set on the server, so why is the server discriminating against one workstation?

I am trying to follow the guidelines for increased credit card security. To this end, I have switched all employees from being Windows 7 "Administrators" to "Standard Users." Oddly, every POS station and work station can open Store Manager - with the exception of one workstation. On this one workstation, I receive the error "Bad File Name or Number" when opening Store Manager. I believe this is being caused by Store Manager not being able to open folders (e.g. "Store Operations>Reports" on the server). My clue here is that when I set the paths to the proper folders using RMS Administrator, it says "access denied."

P.S. By switching to the Administrator account on the "problem" workstation, I can log into Store Manager.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

The file/folder permissions for any RMS program is held on the workstation and is not on the server.  The only permissions for RMS held within the database is the cashier permissions after the program has launched and someone logs in.

The problem you describe is because the user in question does not have permission to the RMS folders.  This is also why you received the "Access Denied" error message.

Using an administrator account for that workstation, you will need to set permissions for the Microsoft Retail Management System folder to allow access.

    Ed,

Thank you for your reply. Adding permissions fixed one problem, but I am still not able to access Store Operations Manager. Now I no longer receive the message, "Bad File name or number."

Now I am presented with "Error 3709 Requested operation requires an OLE DB Session object, which is not supported by the current provider."

I log back into Administrator, and voila, SO Manager works perfectly on this same workstation.

What does this message indicate? (Yes I am using the most recent version of RMS (including the SQL server updates).

    Thank you,

    Steve

PS Here's an mistake others may wish to avoid, because it makes setting permissions unnecessarily tricky.  I set up a user account with the same name as the computer name (both were "Liquor Manager") I will not do that again!

Please disregard the post above about Error# 3709. This was an unrelated new issue which was solved by was solved by calling Microsoft and resetting the Client Network Utility.

Meanwhile the mystery problem with not being able to log in to Store Manager with a non-administrator account persisted.

I agree with Ed that most permissions are set on the client machine. However, my Store Manager uses a shared "Reports" file and a shared "Labels" file both of which live on the server. These are the only two files which I know to be shared!? However, by sharing the "MS Dynanics RMS System" folder and the "Store Operations" folder on the server, my "Bad file name or Number" issue went away. Seems like overkill to share the whole

folder, but heck, it solved the problem!
