Dynamics SL 2011 GL Account Number Segmentation?

Does Dynamics SL 2011 General Ledger allow (feature) segmentation in the GL account number?

This is my first day on Dynamics SL (used to be Solomon, correct?).

Does the General Ledger allow accounts to be "segmented"? In other words you (could) have 3 segments: COMPANY, DEPT, ACCOUNT. And you have a list of values for each segment, and you then combine elements from the 3 lists to create account numbers. So you could have something like "100-200-6800", which could mean "Company 1 - Engineering Dept - Salary Expense" and so on. As opposed to having one "account number" only. So you would have to have 6801 Engineering Salaries, 6802 Sales Salaries, 6803 Admin Salaries, etc.

I searched the forum, and looked through the Dynamics SL Help files, but I did not see a clear answer to this question. I did see the discussion of "Accounts" and "Subaccounts". But I don't think this is segmentation as I am used to it.

Thanks.

Good afternoon, Matt. The "natural" GL Account number cannot be segmented. What you describe is one way that the subaccount could be segmented, allowing you to report on each segment. Using your example, if you use 6800 as the Salaries account, you could then follow in the subaccount with 01-003 where 01 would be company 1 and 003 the engineering department. You also have the option of validating each of these segments. Read up on Flexkey Definition in the Shared Information module for a more detailed explanation.

Yes, Dynamics SL used to be "Solomon" (still is for some of us old-timers).

Every transaction in SL will have an Account and a Subaccount.  In your example, the Company & Dept would be part of the Subaccount (though Company wouldn't necessarily be needed, as it is its own field).

Subaccount segments ("Company", "Department", "Cost Center", "Division", "Business Unit", "Location", etc.) are created in the Shared Information module, in the FlexKey Definition screen.  The specific values for each Subaccount segment are created & maintained in the FlexKey Table Maintenance screen in Shared Information.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Stuart. Flexkey definition is a very on point reference. Matt.
