Sorting Products

Posted on by 490

For each product we sell, there is multiple sizing.  So we enter each one as a unique product (ie Golf Shirt Youth Medium, Golf Shirt Youth Large, Golf Shirt Adult Small...) and that works fine.

But here's a small issue.  Is there a way to sort these items?  In Smart Lists, it shows up alphabetically (which tends to make processing the data difficult)..while we'd like it to show up in ascending sizes.  Is there a way to do this without including numbers in the field (Golf Shirt 1 Youth Medium, Golf Shirt 2 Youth Large...)

Almost forgot - actually a friend reminded me, there is a 3rd Party solution specific to your business which adds a new dimension to the order entry and inventory modules. The company is Compass Technologies I believe. Allows for a order of say 100 shirts on one line (for bulk pricing), but then provides a sub-menu for mix&match. Of course from thier you have the information setup to do your analysis as well.

    Good.

Like I said there's no corrrect way of implementing it as this can work for you but won't work for another. Glad you're happy with the system!

Actually, there were a fair number of good ideas here.

We used the 'Generic Description' field to put a slight variation of the Sku.  For instance, our item codes for a Golf Shirt would be FGS-YM, FGS-YL, FGS-YXL (with YM meaning youth medium...)  But in the Generic description, we simply changed the actual size to a numeric code (FGS-1, FGS-2).  Since the customer never sees this field, that's okay to do.

Then in the smart list, we simply sort according to the Generic Description.

     Works great.

    Re: Sorting Products

There is always a challenge when you implement this kind of environment in GP. I've seen GP users deciding to use the Inventory User Category for Size, Color, Style, etc. Others uses Item Class and others did exactly how you implemented it but each can have its own limitation.

While Smartlist is very good at querying the db its limited in presenting the data format. If you have Smartlist Builder then try to use this tool to enhance your Smartlist experience, otherwise, just export the data into Excel and you may have a better chance of getting the result you need.

    Goodluck!

Assuming that you mean that "unique product" equals Item Number, you can use one of the user defined fields on the inventory card to create a numeric value based on size. Typically, I have used these field to create broad categories with may or may not be related to the Class ID such as in your case, Style, AgeGrp, Gender, Size, Color, etc.. (Built in up to 5 fields). These fields are available via Smart List.
