Hi,
do you know, how long it takes for a NAV consultancy to implement MS NAV in a mid-sized company.
And how many consultants work on this project?

Hi Martin,
my opinion: difficult to quantify, it depends on many factors
depends on which and how many processes you need to manage,
how many users and how many company you need to manage,
depends if you migrate from an old system and if it is a first implementation
depends on how many reports need to produce
depends on how many customizations are required
etc.. etc..
you need a partner for the implementation.
Hello Roberto,
thanks for you answer.
I know itsdifficult to quantify.
I study Informatics at a university and we must create a businessplan for a NAV Consultancy.
This is why i asked these questions.
The question was about implementing NAV in a mid sized manufacturing company, no customizations.
The processes we need to manage are Financial Management, Manufacturing, SCM, CRM and HR
Can you give me an estimate, how long it approximately will take to implement and how many people are normally working on such a project?
Stefan
As Roberto said, it is difficult to say, but there are some approximate estimates:
-trade company 3-6 months
-manufacturing company 6-12 months
These are too approx estimates. I had vanilla implementations for only 15-20 days, but I have complex implementation (manufacturing, WMS and construction) with 18+ months. Midsize implementation usualy is 2-8 months. But question is "what is a midsize?"
If you want more precisely, you need to give requirements, number of users, number ant type of locations...
Number of consultants depends case by case, from 1 to 5+.
Hi Roberto,
Again it is hard to say as already indicated, but you are asking for plain NAV, so no customizations which is rarely the case. Everybody wants customizations which is the strength and the weakness of NAV. It is a strength because NAV is so easy to change and customize for the individuals needs, but it will cost you later when it comes to upgrade time as upgrades become considerable more expensive the more NAV have been taken away from standard.
There are a number of ways to mediate this problem. One is to have very good source code control, so you know what have been customized and why, Another is to do all customizations in smart ways making them easier to upgrade. Then there of course is to look for true vertical solutions where a partner is building and maintaining a industry solution that is sold to many customers with out any customizations. This distributes the cost between many customers and keeps it affordable. Last but not least any combination of the above.
Back to your question:
- Standard NAV would mainly require training of all staff. So it depends on the number of staff and how many modules they need to be trained in.
- Migration of all current data. (this is more or less complex if you bring over balances only or historical data, the more areas of the application you have and how much data you have)
- Typically one of 2 pilots are done where full mock migration of data is done and the result is tested. This is typically done until the result is satisfactory for the customer.
- Then there is the actual cut over and follow up.
- Last but not least ongoing support (and it depends how long you are counting)
I have seen smaller implementation done in less then a week (40 hours) and bigger that takes several months/ If there is no development done I don't think it should take longer then 6 month (600 hours). Remember you rarely have people working non stop on one implementation as customers never have time for doing this all the time. They typically have a business to run...
I hope this gave you a little more ideas about it.

As I said, case-by-case :(
You can count only some approximate quantities.
the above point depends on various factors like processes, level of users, management of change
but if generally it is a vanilla implementation and no old data needs to be imported a Standard NAv implementation can be completed with 2-3 resources within 8-10 weeks flat
I totally agree with Roberto, and everyone else's answers. You will need a business analysis done to see what the scope of the project is, and what the company's needs are before you can have an idea of what it takes to get it done. Within each module that you mentioned, there are plenty of different configuration setups.
There are methodologies for doing Rapid Implementations, geared towards specific industries. An implementation or Dynamics NAV can be done within a couple of months, or it can take 10x longer depending on what you need to setup.
I strongly suggest that you get an assesment done by a partner so you can have a clear idea of what you're getting into, and don't find yourself in middle of an implementation that's gone over your original budget and timeline. You should not rely on asking around online to make an estimate for your project.
