I am working with a small retailer who is running RMS on some VERY old hardware that is beginning to fail. She acquired the store & VAR from previous owner and VAR is somewhat less than helpful in offering hardware solutions that are are not embedded windows or very slow/old P3 type machines.
I'm trying to find out how viable it is to purchase Window 7 Pro machines and then migrate RMS to these machines? And how does one go about migrating license information over? So far all the VAR's I've talked to have implied she needs to buy new hardware & licenses? Which does not sound logical to me...anyone have some ideas and/or VARS that are willing to sell equipment that's from current era & migrate RMS data.

Thanks - she has begun the process of getting current on her support contract(s) and software. Then will cross the upgrading hardware element...I hadn't realized that software licenses for RMS are somewhat controlled by Microsoft & VARs
Hi Ginar,
What version of RMS they are presently on has a great deal to do with the accuracy of the responses you may get. I will simplify if I may?
If it is a presently supported version you are correct, she would only need a new license if she is adding more( than what she presently has) POS systems.
If she is replacing and de-activating the old ones she may re-use the ones she has and you can additionally use any Windows 7 Professional or Higher systems you'd like.
(if it is a supported RMS version).
The files required may be obtained from CustomerSource if she has an existing service plan and access or they may additionally be provided by a Microsoft Partner.
To obtain information about obtaining a Partner you can speak with Sales and Operations
at 800 456 0025 or visit www.pinoint.com to locate one. You may additionally speak with them concerning your license questions also as they would be able to provide you with verification also.
We have managed to run RMS 1.3 and newer on Windows 7. Just make sure it is the 32bit version.
Thanks - she inherited the business from her mother who has since 'passed' so in theory it's still similar/same ownership (or so it seems to me but who knows what MS will consider it)
I will reach out to you directly to understand 'cost' assuming she can get on a current MS contract.
Appreciate the information

We can help you with that process, we do this every day and have for many years.
First of all, right now they do not even own the software officially; there is a form they need to fill out and sign to get it transferred to their name.
They need to renew the annual maintenance plan with MS; this gives them the rights to the newer versions that will have W7 support and the latest features, and will be supported by MS.
Then we install RMS on the new HW, and upgrade the DB during the process.
She should probably have some help learning how to use the system properly as well, so we can do some training along with the process.
It gets a little tricky if the licensing was not registered under obvious info relating to the previous owner, and she may need to purchase the new licenses. But it's about 40% less to renew if we can find the correct info.
