I have a requirement for users to populate a specific field upon the closing of an Opportunity. The optimal way to do this would be to add that field to the Opportunity Close form but it seems to not be editable. Is there another way to accomplish this?

The opportunity close is a system form and cannot be modified.
The best you can do is replace it.
You can replace it with either your own web page or a dialogue. You would also need to modify the button.
Another alternative is to add the data you want to capture on the form and show them or in hide them when the status or any field value changes

One way to achieve what you are looking for is to use a custom dialog and hide the system default buttons/dialog.

Hi, you can't do any customization of Opportunity close entity. This entity uses custom apsx page, that can't be updated by CRM admin.
