I work for a food distribution company currently using GP for the full ERP process.
We are looking to change so that stock is maintained in a separate warehouse management system and orders from GP are picked and delivered in the stand alone WMS then sent back to GP for invoicing, financials etc. Before we look at consultancy from our current ERP provider, can you advise if there is anything standard in Dynamics GP that could be utilised to do this, either with consultancy help or without.

There is nothing native to GP to provide this functionality. We just did this for one of our clients. They have an SFTP server where text files are sent daily. Through a combination of PowerShell scripts and applications developed using VS C# this project was completed. It took almost a year to get it all accomplished.
We created SSIS packages, upload/download tables and scheduled SQL jobs to move data between Dynamics GP and our WMS system. The biggest ongoing headache for us is the two separate inventories and the inevitable mismatches that occur between the systems that need continual reconciliation. Volume is high here though as we process an average of 3,500 Sales Orders and 200 Purchase Orders a day across a dozen US warehouses. It took about the same amount of time to create and implement a solution as well and was done in-house.
I would highly recommend looking at 3rd party WMS products that interface with GP (there are several) as long as it meets your requirements and avoid having to build one yourself.
