BOM’s and Standard Costing

We want to maintain a BOM for items that are actually Buy items. We do not want this BOM or item configuration to interfere with Standard Costing when we roll the costing.

As an example, we have a weldment item that has multiple items that are formed and welded together by an outside vendor. Therefore the item is a Buy item and we need to maintain a BOM under the Buy Item Number.

We have found that if we want to have access to the BOM, either as an Engineering BOM or a Manufacturing BOM we must have the item configured in the Item Engineering Data as a Make or Buy. If we change the setting to Buy then the BOM is not accessible.

We believe that if we have the BOM as a Manufacturing BOM and in the Item Engineering as a Make or Buy GP will look to the Manufacturing BOM when it rolls the Standard Cost.

So my question is, if we have an item where we enter a BOM as an Engineering BOM, and we configure the item as a Buy in the Item Resource Planning, and configure the item as a Make or Buy in the Item Engineering Data, will the Standard Cost roll correctly treating the item solely as a Buy item.

I apologize in advance if the wording is not clear but at the moment it is the best I can explain the situation.

What version of GP are you using?

Your logic is good. If an item is periodic valued and has a manufacturing BOM it will not rollup the BOM if Item Engineering are set to 'Buy'. (GP2010). - this was not the case in earlier mfg versions........I know in Version 8 it would have seen the mfg BOM and rolled it up regardless.

The Engineering BOM is totally disregarded during the rollup process. If there is no mfg bom - and the item is make or buy in item engineering - it should treat it as a 'buy. (GP2010) You should test your theory in a test company and verify.

MBS has done some nice work on cleaning up the std cost rollup in later versions it really works well and logical and most of my clients have no issue - you should be able to store an engineering BOM and still buy an item..........and rollup (correctly) the material costs.......

Let us know how it works out...........

Thank you. I will validate in test company

I have been focused on a few other projects but have tried some configurations.

What we have found is that if Item Engineering is set to Buy with either the BOM set as MFG or Engineering the BOM disappears. Meaning you cannot view it.

It appears our solution is to set Buy item BOM's to Engineering BOM, set Item Engineering to Make/Buy, and then set Resource Planning to Buy. This will allow us to "see" the BOM and still plan and use as Buy item.

    Does this make sense?

Yes - makes sense to me.

    Good Luck
