In GP how to have multiple customer item numbers map to 1 GP item number

I am working in Dev and the below changes are proof of concept.
  • I modified SOP60300 by adding the field CUSTITEMNMBR to the primary key and all unique indexes.
  • I added a duplicate record to SOP60300 by SQL only changing the CUSTITEMNMBR value.
  • I now can have many CUSTITEMNMBRs mapped to one Item in GP
  • In the GP GUI, I can enter any of the multiple customer numbers and the GUI substitutes the value typed in with the corresponding GP Item.
What I need now is a way to capture the original CUSTITEMNMBR. Ideally I would like to store this value in IS010001.CUSTOMERPARTNUMBER_I.
Current version of GP is GP10 SP3.
My Question, has anyone else had this need and is there a solution?
If there is a solution in a newer version GP, I would like to know that too.

Why do you need such a request! And what would be the impact of having such a data in your database? When printing the invoice, which item will be selected?

Normally in Dynamics GP customer item window, you can have one item per customer and one substitute item to replace this item, in addition to five user defined fileds that could be used to fulfill your need.

You cannot directly modify Dynamics GP database you will not be able to upgrade and you will have to perform same modifications on DEXTERITY tables as they key you modified is defined in dexterity tables.
