HR Dependent Comment Field

I have to import a bunch of dependents into the HR Employee Dependent window. Initially, my plan was to delete everything currently in the table and create a macro to import them in. I noticed on those currently set up as "Self" that the comment field is set to "(Used for Benefits.)". Is that comment created when Payroll and HR are first synched? Is it used in programming of GP as a flag or trigger; or can any text be put in there?
