Discontinue Service Item GP 2013

Posted on by 75,730

IN GP 2010 and earlier you cannot discontinue a service type item. Does anyone know if in GP 2013 you can discontinue a service type item?

    Danny,

For kits you can do the same thing. But remember, the kit item does not change the kit components. If you want to discontinue the components, you'll also have to modify their item records. You could never put kits on a PO and you can't put Discontinued items on a PO, so you should be OK there. Assembly items don't have any special designation on the Item Master, you'll want to open the Bill of Materials window and mark the bill as Obsolete.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi Richard,

I agree with you, it was a big oversight. What I have always done is to use SQL in the back end and change the Type to Discontinued. I have never had any problems doing this.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I never understood the reasoning behind not being able to discontinue a service item. Let's say you set up a service item called floppy disk repair. Now, no one even knows what a floppy disk is so you want to discontinue that service. Why you can not just change that to discontinued makes no sense.

Yes, the IV00101.INACTIVE field is there but not accessible. In our case the service items need to be discontinued because the service is no longer offered. If GP 2013 can at least expose the Inactive field we need to plan for a GP 2013 upgrade in the not too distant future. Now the real question is how does GP 2013 handle Inactive items? Can they still be placed on a sales or purchase order?

NO, you cannot discontinue a Service Item.  The concept of "service items" is that they represent services that are bought and sold and not real items.  Now, like was mentioned in the other post, 2013 will allow you to inactivate the item.  Discontinue frequently means you can still sell until the quantity on hand (always 0 for service items) hits zero. but you cannot purchase the item.

Check out our Inventory Management Techniques for solid definitions of the various inventory status codes.

The Inactive field has been in GP for quite a while, but it has been hidden. But in GP2013 it has been revealed and has some programming behind it now.
