Is it advisable to add bill of materials to "out-sourced" assemblies? Is the MRP (Dynamics SL) smart enough to ignore BOM if source for an assembly is "out-sourced"?
I want to make sure that the MRP will not generate requirement for components in Bill of Materials for the Out-Sourced assemblies.
I know there are a couple of third party 'MRP' modules as such (ex. JAMS, MaxQ, Newport), which we do not use at this time. Without knowing the specific brand of add-on, I surely would not want to make specific claims that could steer you wrong.
However, if the inventory part is designated as 'Outsourced' or 'Purchased' on the Inventory Items screen, it should generate purchase demand (rather than work order demand) for said assembly, regardless of the existence of a BOM.
A quick question to your partner, or the vendor for your particular MRP module, should be able to confirm that quickly enough.
Thanks for your message, it makes sense.
Just one clarification, do you have the MRP module turned on?
We do a fair bit of purchasing items which we sometime build in-house also. Thus we have parts which have BOM/Routing which is sometimes purchased outright.
Your inventory demand should not generate needs for the subcomponents until the a work order is created. Thus if you purchase the assembly, demand is fulfilled and not work order would be needed. In that case, the need for the subcomponents should never hit your reorder report.
Depending on how you run your replenishments, mileage may vary, but this works fine in our case.
