Update to cost layers outside the GP gui

We have a need to update the cost layers outside the GP gui. Specifically, we want to update QTYSOLD = QTYRECVD and UNITCOST = 0 and RCPTSOLD = 1 for each unsold layer in the IV10200 table for many discontinued items that we want to liquidate. I would update QTYONHND in IV00102 at the same time. I am wary about doing this outside the gui. Would doing this in SQL have any impact on the parts of GP that touch the IV10200 table? Thanks.
