Getting an error while upgrading Dynamics GP company database to 2016R2

Hello,

We are currently working on upgrading GP 2013 R2(12.0.1745) to GP 2016 R2(16.00.0552).  Instead of upgrading GP from 2013R2 to 2016R2 , we are planning to do clean installation, steps are as below,

Step1: Build new server and do clean straight installation of GP 2016R2.(Get rid of old servers once our users are good with GP 2016R2.)

Step2: Open GP Utilities and upgrade existing company database to 2016R2.

I am getting below issue to proceed with Step 2

Error: Product 0 does not support upgrading from version 12.0.1745.

Based on my research on above error i found out that first we have to upgrade GP 2013R2 to latest build then upgrade to 2016R2. If this statement is correct then I have 2 questions  , please find below. If this statement is wrong then please help me to how to resolve above issue.

Question 1: Should i first upgrade GP 2013R2 to latest build and upgrade all companies to latest 2013R2 build then proceed with above 2 steps ?

Question 2: If above statement is yes then can i upgrade as below

                   GP 2013R2 12.0.1745 --> GP 2013R2 12.00.2198

                   GP 2013R2 12.00.2198 --> GP 2016R2 16.00.0552

Thanks in advance for your help and support.

    Hi,

    You can't upgrade straight from 12.00.1745 to 16.00.0552.

    Please check out this other thread :

    community.dynamics.com/.../208567

    And yes, your 2nd statement is likely to work.

    That looks correct. I am also working on same this week. If you have any issues, maybe you can write back here so I can know how yours went also. :)

    Hi Beat,

    Since we are talking about upgrade, i would like to ask another question.

    Do you have any recommendation to upgrade company db to latest service pack/hotfix of 2013R2 to be performed from application server or from database server itself?

    Hi Preetham,

    it depends.. some companies do not allow for applications installed on their DB server, which requires you to run the upgrade from an 'Application' server, wherever that be located, but try to keep it as close as possible to the DB server, to avoid network lags and/or accidental disconnects.

    I've always been lucky in our company to be able to have a local GP client copy installed on the DB server, with all the ISV products, thus making the upgrade the most speedier..

    If you have a very large setup with dozens of companies, you could spread the upgrade across several application servers and run the GP Utilities in parallel (i.e. for 50 companies, you could run 5 GP Utilities clients to perform 10 upgrades for each.. ).

    Just make sure you have proper backups before you start.

    Hi Beat,

    Thanks for the details.

    Yes you are correct, In our company DBA's are very particular on installing any of the applications other than db related so we just have to proceed from our application server itself.

    One good thing is we have only 2 live companies . Regarding backups yes we do have processes in place such as VM snapshots/DB backups.

    Hi Beat,

    I installed  GP 2013R2 12.0.1745 and upgraded to GP 2013R2 12.00.2198 now i am using GP Utilities to upgrade company databases but i am facing below issue, please let me know your comments,

    I found this thread community.dynamics.com/.../147481 but i have .NET 4.5.1 installed in SQL server which is the resolution mentioned in the thread.

    The following SQL statement produced an error: exec wfDeployCirAssemblies

    [OK]

    (When i clicked OK i got below error)

    ERROR [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]SELECT failed because the following SET options have incorrect settings: 'ANSI_WARNINGS, ANSI_PADDING'. Verify that SET options are correct for use with indexed views and/or indexes on computed column

    [OK]

    (When i clicked OK i got below message)

    Upgrade of database : failed! Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities will now shut down.

    [OK]

    Hi Preetham,

    2 things that come to my mind :  ODBC link settings for your GP server (from the system where the GP Utilities is run), or some indexed / computed table in the GP company DB..

    Check out this thread :

    community.dynamics.com/.../60834

    Also make sure you don't have a "linked server" connection within your SQL server and you address the right SQL instance in your ODBC link.

    Hi Beat,

    Finally i was able to resolve all issues and upgraded all companies to 12.0.2198.

    So now Dynamics and all companies are in 12.0.2198 version. I installed GP 2016 application and open DB utilities to upgrade db to 16.00.0552 but I am facing below error ,

    "There was a problem ascertaining product version information Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities will now exit. Please check the duinstall.log file for more information"

    When i checked duiinstall.log file here is the error i have noticed,

    "Failure encountered ON 3/26/2018 at 5:10:23 PM.  Error:  Product 0 does not support upgrading from version 12.0.2198."

    I thought the upgrade path which i was following is correct, I am not sure why i am facing this error.

    Can you please let me know your comments.

                      GP 2013R2 12.0.1745 --> GP 2013R2 12.00.2198

                      GP 2013R2 12.00.2198 --> GP 2016R2 16.00.0552

    Hi Preetham,

    please check the following articles on the same issue you have:

    community.dynamics.com/.../266192

    community.dynamics.com/.../261815

    i think its all about the version you are upgrading from and the service pack you need to install.
