With what to build fetchXML reports (WHY DOES MS MAKE EVERYTHING SO COMPLICATED!!)

Hi, Would someone please help point me in the right direction. I am struggling to find out information on what can I use to build reports for CRM ONLINE. Why does MS make everything so complicated..............

I want to build one page summary of various account info. I found this Youtube video but the guy is using VS 2008 and BIDS (but it looks like it is now decommissioned): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRLSDvlHezk

I tried the below approach but it did not work:

Step 1 - download SSDI BI (Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012) www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Step 2- download Authoring Extension (Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Report Authoring Extension (with SQL Server Data Tools support) www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx It seems I can't install the extension and get fatal errors (is not compatible or did I download wrong one).

I am just completely lost, because I was told I need extension to do fetxhXML. Someone suggested to use Report Builder but that seems to be on premises only. Please can someone please help me understand what exactly do I need to download to build those bloody reports.. I would very much appreciate it. Thanks so much!

Dan

You can use the SQL Server Data Tools that are on the SQL 2012 media, I think they also come with the SQL 2012 Express Edition w/ Advanced Services. This will install the VS 2010 shell with the proper report project templates (if you don't already have a full version of VS 2010) installed. From there you can install the CRM 2013 Report Authoring Extensions and you should be set. There isn't a supported version of the Report Authoring Extension that works with a version of Visual Studio higher than 2010.

Thanks Jason, what is though SQL Server Data Tools that are on the SQL 2012 media? Is this something I need to download? Where is this SQL 2012 media?

Thanks Jason, so I will install that, then Authoring extension. And then I can then use to build fetchXML reports with this? For CRM 2013 online version?

I installed: SQL 2012 Express Edition w/ Advanced Services. I just have 2 questions

When I loaded it I get questions to choose default environment for Visual Studio 2010 Shell

    1) which default environment would I choose for building reports?

    - Business Intelligence Settings

    - General Development Settings

    - VB Development Settings

    - Visual C# Development settings

    2) Also when I try to install CRM 2013 Report Authoring Extensions I get fatal error. I downloaded it directly from here www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    Hello Donyc,

We are sorry to hear about your initial experience setting up the environment required to build fetchXML reports.

I confirm that the Jason' recommendations are correct. As for your additional questions

    1) you would need to select the Business Intelligence Settings to build reports

    2) we would need more information on this - was there an error log file with more detail?  Is there anything logged in Event Log?

As I understand that the issue is urgent for you, I would recommend you to benefit from the included into your CRM Online subscription Support and open a Support Request with CRM Technical Support at the following link - www.microsoft.com/.../contact-technical-support.aspx and work with our team to address the issue.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thank you for using Dynamics CRM Communities.

    Hi Nina,

Can I use SQL 2012 Express Edition w/ Advanced Services for CRM 2013 ONLINE and then install authoring extension 2013?

    - When I get the error installing authoring extension, where could I get this error log from?

    - is there support phone # I could call directly to speak with someone? I am willing to pay for service I am just not getting anywhere....

    Hi Donyc,

we would need to verify if you could use the mentioned by you components. For this reason, I would strongly recommend you to contact Microsoft Technical Support at this stage. You will not need to pay for additional Service as you are eligible to get free unlimited support with your CRM Online subscription.

You will be able to contact Microsoft Support by phone (see below the numbers per country or region) virtualchat.support.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx

We recommend you contacting Microsoft Support via Web as you will be able to provide relavant information about the issue like screenshot of the error message and details about your OS and versions of the components already at the initial contact. I ensure you that you will be able to speak directly with a technical support specialist regardless of the way of initial contact. After you have submitted a Support Request from www.microsoft.com/.../contact-technical-support.aspx

(which takes some minutes only), you will be contacted by our team within the defined in our SLA response times and assigned a Support Engineer who will be working with you on this request. My colleague will call you and directly discuss the issue with you and guide you also through the needed steps to get further information about the particular error message, e.g. reviewing the Log Event.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thank you for using Dynamics CRM Communities.
