Currently we use our back order report from SL and write on it each week the order status - known ship dates etc. We would like this information to save and print on this report.

I assume you are not using the Work Order module. Is that correct?
If not, you could make a simple customization to the Sales Order screen by adding a User field that is a date field and perhaps labeling it as ETA or whatever you chose. When entering the sales order, you could fill in this date at the document level of the SO. Then you could customize the Back Order report and add this field to the report.
Otherwise, there is a website called the Microsoft PinPoint tool. You can search for add-ons for Dynamics SL. The URL is pinpoint.microsoft.com/.../Default.aspx.
