GP 2013 Install

I'm also new to GP and have a consultant setting it up on our servers.  He insists we need Active Directory set up for both computers and users but I have my doubts since it's SQL.   We are getting an error during the install that he blames on the lack of AD being installed on the network.  We have a Great Plains dedicated server which is AD and has our financial team users as AD users but their computers are NOT a part of the domain.  The error is with the Dexterity Runtime.  During install it says no permissions and after install Dynamics will open only to say that Dexterity has an issue with "unknown dictionary".   I feel bad asking this group being such a newbie but my understanding is that the install should work on any machine (We're a Win 7 Pro 64 bit Dell shop) and later the user logs in with an SQL account (I have SA on our test system).

Any thoughts would be great!

GO does not require active directory however Management Reporter 2012 does. If you do choose to use the GP Web client that too will require AD. Having said that, what you are running into right now is a permission problem. You need to create a shared directory on that server where you will store your forms and reports dictionary. Then you need to share that with the Everyone group and give that group read/write access to it. The final step on the server is you need to go into AD Users and create users for each person that will be connecting to this server. These user IDs must match the user IDs on the workstations. Personally, I would add these users to the domain and then rights can flow down from AD controller. It would be very odd to have a domain but not to use it. The difference now is they need to log onto their computers as domain users so their profiles will change and you will need to reload their desktops. The error you are seeing is that you most likely created a package file that is looking to the shared folder on the server to which they do not have access.

Richard - Thank you very much!   We asked the same questions to our consultants here in South Florida and their answers were incomplete and not entirely clear.  You've made perfect sense of the issue and the solution.   I agree with you that since we ended up with AD because we were told we had to have it - we should use it.  We have previously just had server based services - ie, a "QuickBooks" server (the reason we're going to GP), a "Data" server, et cetera.   Now those two will join the "Great Plains" server as AD and users/computers will follow.   Again, thank you so much for your excellent answer and advice.
