How to delete old items in MS GP 10.0 Inventory module

How to delete old items in MS GP 10.0 Inventory module, I have thousand of item , which is no more to be used ,

When i go to delete through the Item Maintenance  window , it gives me an error , that this item is component of Bill of Material , Although the item the is not a component of BOM .

 if any one  knows ,please answer

    We are around the year end, switch all your unwanted items to "Discontinued" and mark the option to remove dicontinued items in yearend closing.

    Note: Removing items will delete the IV history for the item.
