Please advise on best practice for interacting between D365FO instance and AX 2012 instance to be able to insert records from D365FO into AX2012 tables. Thank you.

Could you please provide more information about what you are trying to achieve ? If you are aware about custom services , those are supported in both versions , so that could be an option.

you can use the web services , is available in 2012 and DFO365 ,this is syncro mode , but need some DEV
You can also try to use DIXF (Import/Export) and Data management ( asynchro mode)
