Canadian Payroll - Salary calculations as Hourly Payroll

Posted on by 22,647

Over the past number of years we have been working with Canadian Payroll and have set up a number of clients to use the software and most if not all are at least using the system if not happy with the system.

So, it comes time to make some growth changes for a number of clients, what with the migration to GP2013 and the additional modules that are available and the great marketing job from Microsoft, all these clients now have access and knowledge of the HR modules.

Here is the challenge as I see it and I need help to resolve.

As we know the Canadian Payroll system is not being updated and has not been 'really' updated in a number of years and so it seems that it is falling behind the advances in the other modules.  It certainly is not well integrated with the HR modules as evidenced by the fact that we still need to FILL US Payroll in order to see data in the HR side.

Here is my issue.  And here is where I might need to get something straight in what I currently do with payroll.

In order to get payroll to calculate certain benefits - specifically vacation hours earned - we have to base everyone's SALARY on number of hours worked, and convert the ANNUAL SALARY to an hourly amount.  Then calculations for hours earned of VACATION and other such benefits that are hours earned based will work.

That is fine, has been, is working fine - but now clients want to use HR and it breaks down completely.  HR looks at the paycode SALARY and the Earning and says you earn 28.00 semi-monthly therefore your annual salary is 685.00.

When in fact the HOURLY rate of pay is 28.00, the ANNUAL Salary is 55,000 and you are paid SEMI-MONTHLY at a rate of 2,065.  While all of this is interesting where the problem lies is that HR (based on the filled US Payroll tables) does not report anything related to earning correctly.  If left to its own, you would think this person earns 685 dollars per year.

When you turn on HR and Canadian Payroll already exists the Earnings History display window from HR overrides the current Canadian Payroll table Rate History - understandable, as there are a number of places from HR to which you would want to see the Earnings History - problem is that left alone that data is wrong.

Has anyone fixed this problem?  Has anyone even looked at this problem?  It is a problem, not just us.

Now if there is a different - better - simpler way to get the right data to calculate in Canadian Payroll - meaning paying the employee the correct amount, accruing the correct Vacation and SIck time, and finally to integrate that correct data into the HR module, then please someone tell me what I need to do.

Cheryl I missed this posting when I added my last comments to this thread.

While I might have it over stated, in terms of broken in HR - we certainly have an issue with the way it is reporting.

Do you have any feed back on the Canadian Payroll process and calculating of Vacation hours / days / units.

    Thanks again.

Wondering if anyone from Microsoft is interested in commenting.  The community has been dry on this for several months and the issue is still there.

Are we not doing something right?  If not, we need to correct this.

    Hi Bill,

The payroll side is what is used in the chequerun, and I haven't heard of anyone having to make any changes to how they have the payroll side set up (in US or Canadian Payroll) just by having activated HR.   The payroll side should still function the same.

As far as the earnings history table, you are correct that with HR in the Dynamics.set file, it replaces the CPR Rate History table.  There is not a way to see the CPR window.  You would have to make a custom report to pull from these tables:

    Employee Rate History - P_Employee_Rate_History - CPY10065

Employee Rate History LY (Last Year) - P_Employee_Rate_History_LY - CPY50065

But if there is anything 'wrong', I would ask you to open a support case.  If the issue is with GP, you would not be charged for the support case.

    Thanks,

    Cheryl

Anyone interested in looking at this with me?  Anyone have a better way of doing something in Canadian Payroll?
