Management Reporter 2012 RU4 Installation Issues

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

Granted, my laptop is not a server.  It is Windows 7 Enterprise.  But, on this laptop, I have several versions of GP (including 2013), SQL 2008 R2, SQL Reporting Services, the GP 2013 Web Client, and Business Analyzer.  I could go on and on.

Anyway, the Management Reporter 2012 RU4 Configuration Console is not cooperating.  I'm using the legacy provider instead of DDM, incidentally.

First of all, it keeps locking out my "sa" password.  I've never had that problem.  Fortunately, I've been able unlock sa, since my domain account for Windows Authentication is a sysadmin.

Also, I'm trying to tell the Configuration Console that I want to create a new Management Reporter database.  Instead, it wants me to connect to a database, per the bottom part of the scrolling window.  OK, when in Rome.  So, I put in my sa credentials.  Again, sometimes, it locks "sa" out.  Other times, it gives me the error "The password could not be validated against the password policy."

My "sa" works.  Always has.  I don't need this or any other program goofing it up.

How do I get the Configuration Console to work?

John

RE: Management Reporter 2012 RU4 Installation Issues

Thanks John/William - MS tells me it is a bug -  Bug 559125 which is described as: "Login attempted before password is finished when creating GP DDM."

The issue occurs because MR tries to log in after entering each character of the 'sa' password and if you have a password policy set, that will typically exceed the number of login attempts and cause the account to get locked.

So the workaround is to remove the "Enforce Password Security" on the sa user then check it back on after creating DDM.   My client has a 5 password lockout try limit and the sa password was longer than 5 characters.  Not sure that cures the issue as we did set up an "mrsa" as William set up the GP_Admin with all rights and no check in the "Enforce Password Security" and it still failed.   Thought I would post it anyway for the rest of us having RU4 install issues.

Haven't tried the opening ports yet so that is next on the agenda.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

    Hi Mike:

Could the whole issue be remedied by what's mentioned in opening ports in the firewall, per that KB article?

What I thought would be the easiest part of the integration building turns out to be the road block.  In the Dynamics GP connection box for the data mart (application  and process services no problem), using 'mrsa' with full rights to sql (tested) and all GP dbs, kept getting an error "Could not retrieve list of available databases.  The connection attempt failed".  We don't want to use 'sa' because of earlier problems.  Did anyone run into this issue?  I sense there is something obvious that we are not doing here.  Thanks, Mike

Thanks Bill and John - I will try these suggestions and report results.  I am thinking of using an "mrsa" user without the "enforce password security".

I finally got it to install by temporarily unchecking "enforce password security" for the sa user.

The other issue that I ran into was when it tried to create the Management Reporter database. The client's SQL Server is set to default the database path to the root of the drive. MR didn't like that. Since MR doesn't give you the option of entering a path for the database files, I temporarily changed the default path to a folder that I created for the MR database files. The creation of the MR database then ran with no problem. After installing everything I set all of the SQL Server settings back to what they were.

Whoops!  I almost forgot to tell you the other option recommended by Microsoft is to open up some ports in the firewall.  Please see this article:

    Hi There, Mike!

Although I have not had a chance to re-try this on my laptop, I agree that it's the Account Lockout Policy.  Can you try eliminating the policy to see if it helps.  We recently had to do that, at a client.

Bill/John - I am having the same issue trying to install MR RU4 with hotfix on a client's server.  When I enter sa in the Dynamics Connection section to create the integration, it locks out sa (and users!).  We have tried this several times so it is not a spelling issue.  I sense it may have something to do with the Account Lockout Policy but this seems to be set correctly.    :Let us know if you have any luck, will do the same here.

    Hi John,

Have you had any luck with this? I am having the same problem with the 'sa' password getting locked out. I even tried using a user called gp_admin that has SQL Server sysadmin rights and the same thing happens to the password for gp_admin.
