How Can I increase lengths of Items on Report Writer?

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I have some rather long comments in my report footer, item descriptions, and comment ids. Since this is the case, these comments/descriptions are cut off on my form. How can i edit these fields to make their strings longer. I'm new to editing reports/report templates in Report Writer so i'm just trying to get my bearings.

Thanks so much!

Also, this report in particular is the template for Blank Invoice Form if it means anything to anybody.

Last update : I was able to fix the report footer the same way as the line item.

Thanks for everyone's help. I couldn't have figured it out without you guys.

Update: Just wanted to let you all know i was able to fix the line comments with Donald's suggestion. I appreciate all the help guys!

Now i'm fixing the last part of my report, and from everything i learned from you all, i know it's going to deal with adding on to the calculated comment field in the report footer that Microsoft already provides.

As with before, i'm trying to increase my string so i can see my whole comment.

Does anyone know the script for increasing this length?

    Thanks!

    Hi Kimberley,

No worries and thank you for the clarification.  To display line item comments, please refer to this article.

If you can't view this article then I can create a PDF for you and email it to you.  Just let me know.

Do you ever have those mind blown moments? You guys are going to hate me, but i just realized my problem isn't with the item description but the comment I'm trying to display under the item description ( i now remember when we were setting up GP, the item description was able to hold everything we needed in a comment due to the length restrictions) I am truly so sorry. This has definitely been a learning experience for me.

I guess my next question is how would i go about making the comment entry space larger on RW? Also, is this section the RW refers to as Comment 1,2,3, and 4 in Report Layout?

Also, when it said it wasn't working, i meant that the full comment was still not being shown on the invoice. These comment lengths are typically 150 characters.

Thanks - Sorry for all of the headache!!!

    ,Hi Kimberly,

Sorry for the confusion... so when you say it doesn't work, what exactly does that mean?  Can you provide a screenshot of the report after you have added the calculated fields?  Attached are screenshots of what I have done and how it works.

    Thanks,

    Donald Wisch

Hi Donald - Sorry my picture cut out the bracket. It is actually there. I've attached another of my report - just wanted to verify that everything looked right to you guys. Lastly, in trying to think of anything else i might could have possibly done wrong, i took a picture of a piece inside the calculation - under constraints, they all say interger ( for parse string, sop line work item desc, and etc...), does this check out?

Thanks for all of your help!

    Hi Kimberly,

I don't think Sandip's answer will help you as you are not working with Templates (i.e. Word).  You are working with changes to the actual report in Report Writer.

    Thanks,

    Hi Kimberly,

It looks like your calculated field is not set up correct.  It is missing a left bracket just after the function.  It should look like this...

    RW_ParseString(SOP_LINE_WORK.Item Description  60  1).

When you create this calculated field, it should add them automatically.  You can try it again by editing the field, remove each part then re-adding each of them again.

I would not worry about the 0 being greyed out in your second screenshot.

Please let us know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Donald Wisch

RE: How Can I increase lengths of Items on Report Writer?

Update: fixed my mistake with the other field - I've tried to make the fields look exactly like Dave's and Donald's description.

In order, i went into calculated fields and made a new fields named calc_ItemDesc1,2 and 3. I set them up all the same way - as a string.

    Here's some photos.

              Screenshot-_2800_376_2900_.png     Screenshot-_2800_376_2900_.png     Screenshot-_2800_377_2900_.png

For some reason, they still aren't working. In the third picture, you'll notice there is a 0 greyed out where the field isn't related to a table - is this the issue? Also when i added the 60 and 1 (in the expression calculation) i just went to integer and added these numbers - did i do this correct? I feel like i'm close but still missing a step.

    Thanks for the guidance,
    Kim
