How Can I increase lengths of Items on Report Writer?

I have some rather long comments in my report footer, item descriptions, and comment ids. Since this is the case, these comments/descriptions are cut off on my form. How can i edit these fields to make their strings longer. I'm new to editing reports/report templates in Report Writer so i'm just trying to get my bearings.

Also, this report in particular is the template for Blank Invoice Form if it means anything to anybody.

One of the first things to note is that each of the fields does have a physical size on the report. First thing is to expand that to a large size. What ever you can enter to the Description, Comment fields in the application should be presented on the screen as well.

However, comments are a bit strange in that the system divides them in to ROW or LINES when you have long comments, you have multiple rows / lines and in the document layout you will have several lines that you will need to increase the size on.

Anywhere you have these fields, strech them to make more character space. Font size in this case mattes - bold takes more display space - keep that in mind.

Hi Bill - So i've increase my widths/lengths of my two problem areas - item description, and the one long comment I have at the bottom.

I'm still not able to see anymore of my comment than i was able to in the beginning.

Report writer can only return a certain amount of characters so that is why you are seeing an issue with certain fields such as comment fields. I believe the limit is 80 characters. What you need to do is create calculated fields that use a RW function that will split the data up from one field and bring them back into a few fields. Please check out David Musgrave's article on using RW functions.

So, Don is correct in that the length of the field is limited in the system. However, the comment fields should be set up for you - that is why there is comment 1,2,3,4

Making them all longer - not Wider/Taller - should make a difference

If that does not resolve, then look at what Don has posted and that may fix you.

Bill is right about the comment fields as they are already set up the way I explained. I overlooked that part of the issue here.

As far as the overall issue, can you verify how many characters are in each of the fields you are having issues with?

Hi Kim,

I have faced same issue on Item Description length for word templates. I tried all kind of solution where get 4 lines for Item description i.e. 20 length but it was looking very bad when user was printing report.

What I did I increase length of Item Description like below

export report into XML added Data source again in Template. When I select Item Description field again it was adjusting for full length !!! Yes it was.. lol

Try it and let me know how it goes.

Hi guys, again thanks for the tips. Would you mind going into more detail on how to split the description field into calculated fields? I'm looking at the link and i'm still having trouble understanding how to make the field. Thanks.
