ADX Studio for Portals or SharePoint

(0) ShareShare

I have a prospect needing:

1 - Several Customer Facing Portals

2 - Several Agent Facing Portals

Client uses an Oracle based platform and Dynamics CRM

The Portal will need to integrate to both platforms - one is a Core Insurance platform - Industry Insurance

Use cases are:

Customer login - Quote requests, maintain details

Agent login - Lead management

My questions:

1. ADX or SharePoint?

2. Can and has ADX been integrated to Oracle?

3. What are the decision factors?

What have a lot of customised pages in our ADX solution which pretty rules out the online portal. It seems our options are to either port it to .NET webpages or using the open sourced version of ADX. It puts us in a bit of a pickle.

No longer you can get adx portal. Now it's microsoft crm portal comes with online instance.. still you can get the source code from Microsoft & host it on your servers. If you opt for source code download then Microsoft will no longer support for any issues on it..but online they do.

Hope this helps  before considering to crm portal

No, I'm suggesting to use the online portal, unless your requirements dictate it's not a suitable solution for you.

Martijn Eikelenboom, are you suggesting one should just develop using .Net and stay independent of the portals?

We have problem where we're stuck on adx 7.* and it will cost us alot to upgrade to 8 that Microsoft won't support.

    Hi Jonathan,

If hosted, no not out of the box, you need to create a workaround having a custom api and commont authentication between the portal en the custom api. If onpremises you are free to customize the code as you whish, so you could support it.

Thanks Martijn - do you happen to know if ADX supports Webservice based integration?

RE: ADX Studio for Portals or SharePoint

I spend a lot of my time on SharePoint consulting, and this would have been good advice two years ago. However, the SharePoint world has change greatly. It is meant for collaboration. Portals are not part of the roadmap anymore. It can be done with SharePoint onpremises, but you need to carefully consider the roadmap of SharePoint.

Next to that, you might want to consider developer resources as well. If you go down the SharePoint route or the AdxStudio route think about where you can find developers. Do they need to know al the specifics from SharePoint with a less than optimal development scenario. Or can they use more modern techniques like MVC.

  • RE: ADX Studio for Portals or SharePoint

Thanks Martijn for coming back to me.

I agree with your position, hence my questioning. However, yesterday I reached out to the Microsoft Blackbelt team and the Microsoft Centre of Expertise in the absence of any other answers and got completely the opposite advice, I quote:

"ADX cannot work as a standalone portal without CRM while SharePoint can. In terms of integration with Oracle - SharePoint is better than ADX integrations."

So while my instinct and previous position would steer me towards ADX and away from SharePoint for customer facing Portals, Microsoft do not advise this today and no clear information on ADX and integration with other Applications is available, nor easy comparison of the pros and cons.

We need to integrate to BOTH CRM - for Customer data and Self Service as well as ORACLE for pricing and quotes in this case. I have then today had to advise our teams and hence the Customer to stick with a SharePoint based Portal solution integrated to both CRM Dynamics 365 - On Premise and ORACLE - On Premise.

Be interested in your further thoughts..

I wouldn't go the SharePoint route. These kind of customizations can be done, depending if you are onpremises or online, but the general tenure is that it shouldn't be used anymore for these kind of portals.

If you need data from CRM, CRM online portals / AdxStudio is the best option. With the online portals it might be a challenge to integrate data from Oracle. It can be done, but you need to figure out the best option. Another option might be using the open sourced version of AdxStudio :colinvermander.com/.../dynamics-365-portals-spring-roadmap-and-portal-source-code. Please be aware that this source code will not be maintained by Microsoft.
