Use custom check format

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by
We have a blank check stock that we use to print our checks in GP. We need to create a custom format in GP to print check so that they match our current format (one I created in Crystal Report). I have made a copy of the "Stub Top/Bottom - Text" check in Report Writer, but it does not show up as an option in our Check Format field. Can someone tell me how I can get this new check format listed? I have searched the company db for the name of this check format and the others and I cannot find a table that lists them. TIA, -Stanley

    e-Ins,

Yep, I agree with Beat, Mekorma is the de-facto standard on blank check stock printing. I also give them three thumbs up, they are very good, very nice to work with and the product is seamless. Beat nailed it as far as copying. Because the only thing you need to change in the package file are the two report names, if you choose to go this route, this particular change would be pretty painless. Otherwise, Beat is right if you are trying to copy or create new calculated fields or something like that. I do it all the time for address block modifications.

Good luck, I hope you get to use Mekorma!

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Beat,

Thanks, Mekorma looks to be exactly what I envision the check system to be. It really seems odd that GP does not support the MICR stuff, but oh well. I still have some research on the Mekorma stuff, at this point I will leave this topic as solved. Thanks both Beat and Leslie for your help.

Hi Stanley, Nice to see that you mastered the modification finally. It's a little bit more complicated, because the only way to "replace" a custom report by another that doesn't have the right name, is to export the package with the customization option and rename the report with a notepad editor, and then re-import the package to replace your current one. This can be pretty tricky if you're not familiar with it. As for the MICR record, I'm not sure that the out-of-the-box GP check format support this... We use a 3rd party product called Mekorma MICR that does exactly what you want and also allows you many different check formats assigned per bank account... take a look to it.

Re: Re: Use custom check format

    Hey Leslie,

Yes I had used the copy button, not the insert. I wanted to have a different name for the check format in the Check Format drop down. So I chose the insert button this time and just made a simple change that would be noticable on the check and printed the check after making sure the user would be using the modified check and that works.

So is there a way for me to rename this or create a version with a different name? Also, each of our users has the GP client installed on their PCs. They cannot print the version of the check that I just created. How do I distribute it to each of our users? It's not a big deal for me to go to each user as we only have two that use GP right now.

Also I noticed that the check does not print the MICR line. Does GP not do this? Will report writer be able to handle doing a MICR font?

     Thanks.

    Re: Use custom check format

If you 'copied' the report instead of 'Inserting' the report in Report Writer, then your format became a customized report and it will not show up in the list of check formats. You said 'copy' and 'new', so that makes me think you may not have used the 'insert' button when creating the new format.

Maybe not, could very well be security if 'insert' was used.

    Let us know what happens.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

PS If you did use insert, you do not have to redo your changes. Post back here and we'll go through how to copy.

Re: Re: Use custom check format
Beat, Thanks for the quick reply. I am currently using GP 10. I tried what you said and it is not listed there. Right now I can only see User-Defined Check1 and User-Defined Check 2. I guess I could just modify one of those, but I was hoping to only make a few modifications to the Stub Top/Bottom one since it fit our stock with only minor changes. Just to clarify my process, I went to Report Writer and clicked on the Reports icon. I then selected the "Check with Stub on Top and Bottom - Text" in the Original Reports listbox. I clicked the copy button and gave it a new report name. Then I opened it and went into layout and made some changes. I closed the report and went back into GP to see if my new format was available and it was not. Once I got your reply I went into the menus as you said and it was not listed. Did I do something wrong or miss a step? TIA, -Stanley

Hi Stanley, You don't mention which version of GP you're using, but for sure you need to ensure that the security for that user is set to the alternate form that you created... otherwise it won't be able to see it. Depending on the version of GP that may be in Alternate Forms / Reports security : Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> System >> Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports (This is for GP10).
