Control Add-In instantiation error – but not for all users

Hello everyone,

We are experiencing an issue where some users see the following error:

"The control add-in for the control … on … could not be instantiated because of an AL error."

Interestingly, not all users are affected, even though they have the same permissions and roles assigned.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?

  • What could cause the add-in to fail only for some users?

  • Are there additional browser or client-side settings that might block the add-in from loading?

  •

Any insights, suggestions, or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

As of my understanding/knowledge, this usually happens when the control add-in can’t load in the user’s browser session. Even with the same roles, differences like cached data, browser extensions, pop-up blockers, or missing permissions (media/download) can block the add-in.

Try clearing the browser cache, testing in a different browser, and confirming the affected users have the same permission sets (especially if the add-in accesses external resources). If it works for some and not others, it’s often client-side rather than AL code.

page tried to instantiate the control add-in but something failed on the AL/packaging side or the browser blocked a resource. Please cache this could Extensions: ad blockers, privacy tools, antivirus web shields. Disable and retry

    Thanks

    Hi,

    You can try:-

    • Ensure users use supported browsers and allow:
      • JavaScript
      • Cookies
      • Pop-ups from Business Central
    • Check control add-in configuration in AL (scripts, stylesheets, startup logic).
    • Use Application Insights telemetry to analyze which users and environments are affected.

    2. Browser Setup for Business Central [1]
    3. Control Add-in Object Configuration [2]
