Custom filed mapping when qualifying a lead into a contact

Hi all,

I am looking to amend which fields are pulled to a contact record when qualifying from a lead. Essentially, I have added two custom fields, one called 'Registration Number' and one called 'Registering Body'. These exist on both the Leads and Contacts entity. When I qualify a lead into a contact and account, I would like the information stored in those fields to map to the corresponding ones in the new contact record. At the moment they do not and I can't seem to find an answer.

Thank you!

Custom filed mapping when qualifying a lead into a contact
    Hello RE-24101527-0,

You're encountering a common customization need in Dynamics 365 Sales: mapping custom fields from a Lead to a Contact during the qualification process. This is a crucial step to ensure data consistency and prevent manual data entry.

Here's how to map your custom fields ('Registration Number' and 'Registering Body') from the Lead entity to the Contact entity during lead qualification:
    1. Entity Mapping (Lead to Contact):
    • Navigate to Customizations:
      • Go to Settings > Customizations > Customize the System.
    • Locate the Lead Entity:
      • Expand Entities and select Lead.
    • Go to Relationships:
      • Click on 1:N Relationships.
    • Find the Contact Relationship:
      • Look for the relationship named something like "lead_customer_contacts" or a relationship that represents the lead to contact relationship. It should have the related entity set to Contact.
    • Open the Relationship:
      • Double-click the relationship to open its properties.
    • Go to Mappings:
      • In the relationship properties, click on Mappings.
    • Create Field Mappings:
      • Click New.
      • Source Attribute: Select your custom field 'Registration Number' from the Lead entity.
      • Target Attribute: Select your custom field 'Registration Number' from the Contact entity.
      • Click OK.
      • Repeat the process for the 'Registering Body' field.
    • Save and Publish:
      • Save the relationship.
      • Publish your customizations.
    • Explanation:
      • Entity mappings define how data is transferred between related entities during certain operations, like lead qualification.
      • By creating mappings, you tell Dynamics 365 to copy the values from your custom Lead fields to the corresponding Contact fields.
    2. Testing:
    • Create a new Lead record.
    • Populate the 'Registration Number' and 'Registering Body' fields with test data.
    • Qualify the Lead.
    • Verify that the Contact record now contains the data from your custom fields.

    Important Considerations:
    • Data Types: Ensure that the data types of your custom fields are compatible between the Lead and Contact entities.
    • Field Lengths: If your custom fields have length restrictions, make sure they are compatible.
    • Business Rules/Plugins: If you have any business rules or plugins that affect the Lead or Contact entities, they might interfere with the mapping process.
    • Account Mapping: If you are also creating an Account when qualifying the lead, you will need to do the same mapping process from lead, to account, if you have those same fields on the account entity.
    • Existing Records: Mappings only affect new Contact records created after the mapping is configured. Existing Contacts will not be updated.

    Troubleshooting:
    • Publish All Customizations: If the mappings are not working, ensure that you have published all customizations.
    • Browser Cache: Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
    • Check Relationship: Double-check that you have selected the correct relationship between the Lead and Contact entities.
    • Verify Field Names: Make sure the field names are spelled correctly in the mappings.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully map your custom fields from the Lead to the Contact entity during the qualification process.

Custom filed mapping when qualifying a lead into a contact
    Thank you @Tom_Gioielli,

I am now in the correct place, but I do not have any relationships that are referenced as 'Mappable' under the reference type.

How do I progress from here? Thank you for your help.

Custom filed mapping when qualifying a lead into a contact
You have to open your solution, and in the top ribbon switch to "Classic" view. Once you've done that, you can follow the rest of @Jimmy Passeti | MVP's instructions to do the custom mapping. Check his first screenshot for how to do that.

In your image, you are still in the new editor which does not provide the ability to do custom mapping.

Custom filed mapping when qualifying a lead into a contact
    Hello,

You need to map the field you created in the Lead table to the fields that you want on Contact table.
You need to use the classic interface to do this.

    Create or edit field mapping

      1. Open solution explorer.

      2. Under Components, expand Entities, and then expand the entity you want.

      3. Select either 1:N Relationships or N:1 Relationships.

      4. In the main pane, in the Type list, select Mappable.

      5. Select a mappable relationship. Then, on the Actions toolbar, select Actions, and then select Edit.

      6. Under Related, select Mappings.

      7. For each new mapping, on the Actions toolbar, select New.

      8. In the Create Field Mapping dialog box, select the source field from Source Entity Fields. Select the target field from Target Entity Fields.
