We're reviewing our D365 setup and processes. We've been advised to use our existing in-house labels and a preprinted /lot number/ field as the future equivalent of a /batch number/ in D365. This makes sense, as they serve the same purpose and will help with first-expiry-first-out (FEFO) tracking. We operate a WMS-enabled warehouse, and work tasks are triggered when a /report as finished/ (RAF) action is completed, including picking, printing labels, and putting items in the warehouse.
Our partner suggests that people can manually scan our preprinted labels for the /batch number/ during the picking step, eliminating the need for automatic batch number generation upon RAF completion. My question is whether this is possible. I have doubts because I believed batch number generation was typically configured on the item level during RAF. I'd like to test this but unsure how to set it up, especially without integrating the lot numbers from our production system into D365 to create batch numbers.
