Need solution to sell remainder inventory items

We sell cable by the metre and in reels. If a short length is required, a length will be cut from the reel, breaking the reel means the remainder can only be sold by the metre.

If another customer then requires more than than the remainder, yet another reel is broken open and length taken from it. Eventually there are many remainder bits of various lengths and some complete reels sitting under the item sku code.

Has anyone out there solved how to give sales teams (and possibly ecommerce visitors) visibility of the lengths available in order to negotiate with the customer lengths they can/will take?

I have the feeling I'm going to be adding another table to hold the cut lengths, but there may be something or technique out there I've not thought of...

    it is possible, but I was hoping there may be a way using, serial numbered items to represent individual lengths,  or some trick I'd not thought of  to give same visibility of what lengths are in inventory.

    Sometimes there is some really creative work arounds on the forums!

    I am just curious to know why multiple UOM is not possible for Item = Reel and Meter?

    Thank you for your comprehensive and illustrated responses!

    We have considered the approach of creating two items in GP, 

    • using two item numbers, when we have hundreds of lines will double the number of inventory items we "maintain"
    • stock age will be reset when its moved to the alternative sku
    • a true picture of sock usage for reordering is distorted (although only ordering in reels this may not be a problem as could concentrate only on the reel items)
    • requires warehouse to make extra transactions and fully understand what they are doing with those transactions
    Currently the stock is all under the one item number (SKU) but we can't see if it's 100m in one length or 100 1m lengths, to some customers taking the 1m lengths may not be a problem if they only need 1m lengths for the project they have, others will want one length of 100m.
    Two units of measure set up against the item and price list seems like the "correct" way to do this. I guess you have all confirmed my thinking that I need another SQL table and input screen for the warehouse to record the available lengths, thus sales then have "vision" of what is physically present on the shelf.

    My suggestion is create a Item X with setup of two different UofM (1 Reel = 1 Reel and 1 Meter = 0.01 Reel) and PriceList (1 Reel = $1000 and 1 Meter = $10).

    i.e. If you sell 10 reel(out of 12 Reel) to a customer, create a sales order with single line item (Item X)  for 10 reel (10*1000 = $10000). Then If you want to sell 1.5 Reel (out of remaining 2 Reel), create a sales order with two line item (Item X) one for Reel(1*1000=$1000) and another for Meter(50(50=0.01*0.5)*10 = $500). So, the total values is 1.5 Reel = $1500 and the remaining quantity is 0.5 Reel.

    Hi Tim,

    Mahmoud has given a good solution for you already.  but have you considered to have all cable UOM as meter  and selling to customer.  i.e. if a customer need 1 reel you will sell 100 meter so that your stock always have balance of remaining in meters.

    That's absolutely an interesting case. I have been thinking about it and testing few issues on my test environment.

    I believe that the system alone would never get this well handled. I have been thinking whether you have the open reels (which you break up into meters and sell to customers) separated from the complete ones. I may suggest the following work around solution;

    Separate those open reels from the complete ones physically in your warehouse. Create two items on Dynamics GP with the following criteria;

    • Item (Cable-A); For the open ones, define an item with the following unit of measurement.

    • Item (Cable-B); For the complete ones, define an item with the following unit of measurement.

    The process is illustrated below in details;

    Since these two items are actually (one) item in the warehouse, you may consider to have them categorized under the same Class for reporting purposes. This will provide you with the following advantages;

    • More control over your inventory stock of cable in both reels and meters.
    • More control over your sales transactions

    Finally, I would like to mention that the best case scenario apparently is to create one item on Dynamics GP with on unit of measurement schedule (1 Reel = 100 Meter). Unless you have procedures control on your physical stock, you will not be able to have a precise stock quantity of complete and open reels in your warehouse.
