Importing csv data file in GP without using integration softwares/features

Hi All,

Does anyone know how to import/upload a csv file in GP without using integration software? For those who came accross Rental 4000 (R4K) software, we used to integrate invoices created in that software to GP , and by just running the R4K Sales Integration, all invoices created in R4K were being captured in GP. However, we often experience technical issues in integrating. For this reason, we're planning to get out of it and just do alternative ways of importing the files. Can someone share his/her thoughts on this?

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Shay

    Hi Donald,

Every time we run the Integration, an error message occurs: "Source query returned no records." Had learned that the Table Import Utility is one possible tool. Do you have any idea how this works?

    Thank you so much!

    Hi Shay,

I am confused on why you would stay away from Integration Manager?  It seems to be the preferred tool.  What kind of issues are you running into?

We use IM the majority of the time when it comes to integrating data into GP.  We also use eConnect but that takes a little more work.  There is also the table import option in GP but I have never used it so I cannot speak about it.

The other suggestions that have been mentioned also work but again IM would be your best bet.  I am curious about the issues you have been having with it.  Can you provide some specifics?

    Much thanks,

    Donald

Do you have access to Visual Studio programmers? If so, the Visual Studio Toolkit for GP 10 will allow you write an application that will reside inside GP and write directly to GP. You can put checks inside the code.

We're still using version 10.0 in GP.  Really hope to find other options.

And oh, thanks in advance should you find other ways you could share in the future. Mine as well, I'll be sharing any techniques I could get along the way!

    Thanks and Regards!

    Shay,

I am not familiar with that particular tool and try to touch QuickBooks as little as possible.

Are you current with your maintenance plan? After upgrading to GP 2013 we found our licensing included integration manager which sounds like it is the right tool for this job/process.

Good luck finding a solution. If I think of something I will be sure to send it your way.

    Hi Kirk,

Had an overview on the link you've provided. Unfortunately, that was quite complex. I'm looking for a process that could easily upload/import the file just like when using Quickbooks, file can be uploaded through IIF (are you familiar with this?). Anyway, thanks for the insight. I would appreciate if you have other options in mind.

    Thank you!

    Shay,

I have used this method to update a few hundred records at a time. The key is making sure the data is properly sanitized before merging the flat file into the macro. Take a look at this post by David Musgrave with more info. blogs.msdn.com/.../how-to-use-word-mail-merge-and-macros-to-import-data.aspx

As long as the data is clean (you are essentially entering the data using the same validation as a normal GP entry) you can update a couple of hundred records at a time.

Let me know if this might work for you/ if you need more info. I normally use this method to update the data in a couple of hundred extender windows tied to customer cards and it has been quite effective.

    Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your reply. This involves bulk records; sad to say, I'm not really familiar with macros and mail merges. Do you have any other options?

    Hi Shay,

How many records are we talking about? If you are familiar with macros and mail merges this is doable without any integration software however this may not be the most efficient method.
