Client upgrade rights

Recently applied SP 2 to our GP 2013 installation.  Set it to update the clients when users log in.  But, apparently users with limited rights cannot run the update.  It gives a few errors, starting with "Failed to create verbose log file".  But, for any user that is marked as a 'PowerUser', things run fine.  If I log into a client machine as myself, it works, but not if I login as one of the limited users.  So, which security role do I have to add to the users so that they can actually do the upgrade?

Thanks,

Steve

    RE: Client upgrade rights

Steve - can you share the error message?  Does it point to anything specific?

I don't know much about the back end workings of GP - I tend to do more the user end.  I wonder however if it is about access to the tables rather than anything else.

Most of the standard GP Security Roles have the DEFAULTUSER task ID assigned to them.  I personally don't like that task as I think it has too much access in it.

I know I ran into some issues with security when I didn't give users this task as there are things in the background that can't be seen or modified that are assigned to the task.

This wasn't in relation to these client updates, but may help you.

I cannot say I have ever heard of this Steve. The update should have nothing to do with GP security. If you are able to reproduce this at will I would recommend you open a support case to report this as a possible bug.

    RE: Client upgrade rights

I am referring to when you go to Tools>Setup>System>Client Updates.  Once that is set up, when a user logs into GP, it asks if they want to run the update.  If so, it uses the update file you point to when setting up the client update.  Here's what's happening:

User1 is logged into her computer and has local admin rights for the machine.  She opens GP and logs in as User1.  She's asked to run the updates but gets the error when trying to run it.  If I stay logged into the machine as User1, but log into GP as User2, the update runs just fine.  Then I can close GP, log back in as User1 and everything is fine.

User1 has limited Security rights in the GP User Security settings.  User2 is a poweruser in those settings.  Beyond that, no real difference between the users that I can find.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Are you referring to the Automatic client updates? If so this has nothing to do with GP security as you don't do this inside the application but rather when the user is launching the machine. Make sure the user is a local admin on their machine otherwise you would need to run a Process Monitor and filter the results by Access Denied which will tell you what permissions on the Windows side needs to be granted.
