Email distributor batch job recurrence best practice

I have one AOS server in production. We make good use of workflow and workflow notification emails. Currently I find the recurrence of the email batch distributor set to run every minute. Add to this the Retry Schedule is set to delay period of 1 and retry delay of 0 with a measurement of Minutes. This cant be healthy.

For a production system with about 65 users and heavy use of workflow email notification and a fair amount of alerts and other jobs running on the AOS - what is best practice for :

1) recurrence of the email batch distributor

2) setting up the retry schedule

3) number of AOS', and if more than one should the be in a load balance config or?
