Why would a checkbox field be showing -- and not the checkbox

I created a two option set field the other day and then formatted that field to be a checkbox. However, when I look at the field on the form I see -- and not the checkbox. When I click in the -- the checkbox will appear and it is blank. I can then click in it and it is fine. But why does it first always show -- I haven't seen this before.

Please advise. Thank you.

Hello,

-- means that the field is empty for the case of existing records.

Can you check if you see -- when you create a new record ?

I was facing similar problem and all these suggestions regarding tweaking the width didn't help at all. Then I look at my JavaScript and I realized this is happening because I am setting a two option (checkbox field) to null. Which isnt right. It should only be set as true or false.
