GP 10 to 2011 upgrade

Posted on by 35

Hi

we are thinking about getting our GPv10 upgraded to V2011, and was wondering how long people think this would take. We have 8 compaines currently in GP and use FRX and Nolans ABR. 7 out of the 8 compaines do not have much data in them. I know we would also require any custom reports that we have in FRX to be upgraded to the new 2011 reporting tool. we are running windows 2003 and SQL 2005 server.

Is the upgrade fairly stright forward or is it very time consuming. Also after the upgrade we would like the database relocated to a new windows 2008 server.

Any idea of timescale would help

Thanks

Colin

Your getting a new server anyway, migrate your data, do a test upgrade on Great Plains, then do a test upgrade on MR.  This way you will know exactly how long the upgrade will take and what you are going to run into.  You can update all your reports for GP and have all your reports migrated from FRx to MR and use it as a test against your FRx reports running in production.  You can bring in Nolan ABR and upgrade that as well.  The migration is usually pretty routine, there is documentation on that from Great Plains.  The actual migrations of data take at least 15 minutes a databases no matter how small.  I just did one with 10 db's and the largest db was 2 gb and it took a little less than 3 hours when you are actually running the upgrade.  Then you sitll need to install Nolan at the end and upgrade that.  BTW, once you have all the MR reports running, you won't have to do it again, you could use the upgrade Db.  Just a suggestion and would make your life a lot easier.  And once you have all your reports upgraded you can just package them out and then when you do the real upgrade you have them ready to go in Version 2010.

Good luck and read all the documentation on the upgrade process and hot topics

    Collin,

Do you have any custom reports or VBA customizations within Dynamics GP? These will add some complexity to the upgrade.

I would allow for 2-3 days of test upgrades to confirm everything is fine. Then a couple of days for the FRx to Management report upgrade testing (this depends on the number of financial reports you have). Finally 1-2 days for the live upgrade and the client installs, end user support, etc.

    Thanks.
