Upgrade from 2015 to 2016 (on-premise)?

What is the best practice/preferred method of updating to Dynamics 2016 from 2015 on-prem?

I've gone the route of importing my 2015 org into a DEV instance of 2016 and am already seeing some weirdness in terms of formatting in dashboards, as well as the apparent deprecation of the Workplace area in the SiteMap.

    Hi Joe,

I would recommend to go through this article before upgrading your CRM to 2016:

Thanks Vishnu. I was wondering if anyone had personal experience with any of the suggested methods.

    InPlace upgradation

    • Take a backup of following items

      • Plugin

      • Data encryption

      • Unmanaged solution

      • Email configuration

    • Install and Setup and configure the Development for CRM 2016 environment

    • Install Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions 2016
    • Carry out the PRE Upgrade procedure
      • The following module needs to take a backup

        • Workflow
        • Duplicate detection rule
    • Import the database (CRM 2015) and perform upgrade of the CRM instance from CRM 2015 to CRM 2016.
    • Reactivateworkflow as needed to make sure they match the pre-upgrade screenshot.

Does anybody have any stories to share about their experience upgrading?

    Hi Joe,

Can you provide screenshots on what formatting weirdness you are seeing in the dashboards? Also, I believe the Workspace area has been deprecated from CRM 2013, unless you had an upgrade. You now use the hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) to select the area you wish to navigate to, and there is a "My Work" section under the menu that appears.

To answer your question on best practices/preferred method of upgrade, I've always restored my on-premise CRM 2015 database to a different CRM 2016 server (DEV, for example) and performed an Import Organization.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. For example, there are some weird lines surrounding all of my dashboards. These don't exist in the vanilla version of 2016.
