    Hello MKP303,

    Thank you for your questions.

With this issue, the goal is to get your computer in a state with the least amount of programs running that can interfere with the installation and to remove any residual files that may be blocking the installation.

Please complete the following troubleshooting steps:

    Backup your databases and registry.

    1. Create a new local administrator user account

    2. Log into the new local administrator user account

    3. Clean boot the computer:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

    4. Reboot. Log back in as the new user created in Step 1.

    5. Ensure that any Anti-virus programs did not circumvent the clean boot. We want to be sure that no 3rd party programs are interfering with the install.

    6. Uninstall all instances of Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System**

    7. Reboot. Log back in as the new user created in Step 1.

    8. Reinstall Retail Management System to a new folder

    IE: C:\Microsoft Retail Management System

    (Sans Program Files)

**You can take this a step further by uninstalling all instances of SQL Server and SQL Components, and removing the registry keys for SQL and RMS after step #6. I have seen it come down to that in a past case.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the reply. I attempted to install with your setting and I still get the same result. Shortly after starting the install a window pops up stating:   "The wizard was interrupted before Store Operations could be completely installed" with an option to finish.     This is a brand new fresh server 2008 r2 installation. I have tried with and without SQL installed and have had the same result. I have tried every different compatability option and have gotten the same result. Has me stumped. Thanks again for any help.

    Hello MKP303,

    Thank you for the update.

Did your Windows Server 2008 R2 come with an SQL Server pre-installed?

When you uninstalled SQL Server, did you try deleting the registry keys and folders used by SQL Server? Please remember to reboot the machine after modifying the registry.

    1. Uninstall all instances of SQL

    2. Rename leftover SQL program folders

    3. Rename leftover SQL registry keys

    4. Reboot

    5. Disable antivirus/firewall

    6. Install RMS to a different folder

Let us know if you have any other questions.

No the 2008 R2 did not come with SQL preinstalled so I have made multiple attempts without SQL on the system. I cannot change the folder location for RMS as the install does not even get that far. I believe there is a problem with Windows installer or InstallShield working with 2008r2 but I cannot pinpoint the error. The install quits immediately after extracting initial files. Thanks

    Hello MKP303,

    Thank you for the update.

It is possible that it could be a Windows Installer or InstallShield issue.

In most cases where this was specific to RMS, I found that it had to do with residual SQL installation files and registry keys. The steps above had resolved the issue.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

    MKP303,

Try running a registry cleaner after running Add/Remove for the RMS program.  I suggest CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

    Have you tried this? support.microsoft.com/.../888019

Yes, I have tried: support.microsoft.com/.../888019. I am thinking that something with Windows installer 5.0 is an issue but I havent been able to reinstall it or rollback to 4.5.
