Additional Medicare Tax for 2013 on W-2 in Great Plains 2010

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I have an employee that warranted an additional Medicare Tax withholding in 2013 but Great Plains 2010 didn't automatically withhold the tax. I had to manually force the additional tax from the employee's paycheck in December 2013. Now I am unable to edit the W-2 for this employee to reflect the additional medicare tax withholding.

Is there any way I can force the additional medicare tax withholding to print on this employee's W-2?

Thanks,

Bobby.

RE: Additional Medicare Tax for 2013 on W-2 in Great Plains 2010

    Leslie,

Thank you for your response. We are using Great Plains 2010. We were able to get the update for our Tax Tables from Great Plains online. I see the tax tables for 2014 match the one on your blog with one exception that there is limit for the FICA medicare wages over $200,0000 and but not over $999.999.999.99. However when i ran the 2014 payroll in test for the employee mentioned above for all 12 months, Great Plains still did not calculate the additional Medicare tax. It stopped the calculation of Medicare Tax at $200,000 which was reached in the 11th month and for the 12th month it didnt calculate the medicare tax. Infact when I ran the W-2 in test for the same employee, the medicare wages shows as $200,000 and medicare taxes are at 1.45% ie $2900.

I am not sure if this is due to a filing status of this employee which is Single in Great Plains for 2013 and 2014. Any help to solve this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Once again, thank you for your response.

    Bobby.

    Hi Bobby,

This question is a popular topic this time of year. If You want the tax to withhold automatically, you will need to manually edit the tax tables. I wrote a couple of blog articles that might help.

Here's one about the year-end wage file: dynamicsconfessions.blogspot.com/.../how-is-ficas-wages-and-withholding.html You can learn about where the W2/w3 numbers come from.

Here is one regarding manually adjusting the tax tables: dynamicsconfessions.blogspot.com/.../2014-payroll-tax-tableshow-to-fill-out.html

I hope this will help a little.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
