JournalCategory blank on GeneralJournalEntry

Hi everyone

I'm busy reporting on GeneralJournalEntry. On browsing the data, I noticed that thousands of records have a JournalCategory that is blank.

Why is it blank? Should it be blank? Is this a problem? How do you resolve it?

My problem is a repeat of this unanswered question:

https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/microsoft-dynamics-ax-forum/303512/generaljournalentry-journal-category-missing

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

    Hello BrandonSA,

In addition to the transaction type we have the posting type field and even if the transaction type field is blank you can get ledger transactions that have been made in GL journals.

The next screenprint gives you an example how I filtered some of them.

    Thank you Blue

I know why it has a blank value. I know it has to do with the 0 element of the enum. What I mean is, why does the record have a value of None, or blank. If the record is a General Journal record, it should have a value of General Journal, not None or blank.

What's the point of this field if it doesn't correctly reflect the transaction type of the record?

I want to see General Journals, but I can't, because so many of the General Journal records have a transaction type of None.

That doesn't seem very helpful to me.

    Hi BrandonSA,

When the Enum value is None, it will be blank.

You can test it. When you want to display the enum field in the form, you can set a value of 0 to None and it will be displayed as blank.

This is not a bug, it has always been like this.

But why does it get 0, which needs to be traced back to the time of creation and some other demand considerations.

I'm wondering if this is the hotfix:

    Hi Blue

Thanks, I understand that. What is the point of the field then. It's useless if it should contain 'General Journal' but contains blank instead.

Why is it blank? Why doesn't it correctly reflect the type of transaction it is? Is it a bug, or is there reason for this?

    Hi Ludwig

    Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, i wasn't very clear with regards to my purpose. I'm not reporting the data of that field. I just need to use that field as a filter criteria.

I'm trying to (for example) pick up all GeneralJournal entries, and only those.

There are other sets of data i'm trying to retrieve too, but that's an example of how I'm trying to use the field.

    Thanks

    Hi Brandon,

    I see.

Why do you have to report on the transaction type?

I mean, why aren't the ledger accounts and findims sufficient for generating your reports?

I commonly use the transtype for checking if something was posted incorrectly and does not reconcile e.g. with inventory but I have not used it for creating a financial report.

One of the reasons are the blank values that Blue Wang mentioned.

Another reason is that we have usually a lot of findims and main accounts that should be sufficient for analyzing data.

Can you actually let us know what kind of report you try do generate with the transtype?

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi BrandonSA,

    Thank you for the details.

if your query is related to "transaction type" then its out of box function.

It comes from module you are booking the transaction, such as if you book free text invoice then the type will be customer and for invoice journal type is vendor.

Can you please check the blank values from where those were booked?

    Hi Ludwig and Ramit

Thanks for the answers. Not a customized field, standard Ax.

It's UI label is Transaction Type. I can check this field via voucher transactions as well and it's blank there too (naturally reflecting the value in the table). On voucher transactions, I view record info, and all fields. It's transaction type.

    Hi BrandonSA,

    JournalCategory extends LedgerTransType Enum.

In LedgerTransType ,there is a None value, the None value is displayed as blank on the page.

You can check the database, you will find that there are many entries with 0 in the table, you can confirm whether the data you see is also 0.
