This should fix your problem:
View - Toolbars
Check 'Reset all toolbars and explorers on next restart'
Click OK
Close Crystal Reports and launch again.
The Field Explorer should now work again.

Maybe try and uninstall Crystal and reinstall. What version of Crystal are you using? Is it the one that is recommended for your particular version of SL?

Field Explorer is a button on the toolbar but is not a menu item listed under View. The button would not "depress" when I clicked on (same for Report Explorer) the way other buttons do and the Explorer window did not show. It did start working again but when I try to dock it CR crashes. Very strange.

While in Crystal Reports, if you click on View on the toolbar, is Field Explorer an option? So if it is, and you click on it, does it then show on your screen? Or are you saying that it is in the View menu but when you select it, nothing happens?
