The field Subscription is locked on Marketing List

Dear All,

I tried to create a Marketing List following Microsoft Docs and I juste have some questions regarding static & dynamic marketing lists:

1. Static Marketing List: The field Subscription is set to False & it is locked when Targeted At = Accounts. I suppose it's because we can target accounts but only contacts can subscribe. Otherwise the field is unlocked. Right?

2. Dynamic Marketing List: The field Subscription is always set to False & locked. Is there any reason for that?

3. Is it possible to create a segment from a dynamic Marketing List? I tried from a static marketing list and it works perfectly, but from a dynamic marketing list, the members doesn't show in the segment.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Hi @Nima31,

Have you seen this table - I think it might answer most of your questions around lists and segments. It's taken from this doc https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/dynamics365/marketing/segments-vs-lists and see some inline answers below.

    1. Static Marketing List -

[DR] For the subscription field to be unlocked, you need a static Marketing list targeting Contacts.

    2. Dynamic Marketing List: The field Subscription is always set to False & locked.

[DR] This is expected . Subscription lists are used to represent the fact that contacts in them have given consent or agreed to be part of that list / agreed to receive some sort of marketing materials. You wouldn't want this to be driven by the criteria you define in the list (Let's say people living in New York, or people working for Contoso, are classic examples of a dynamic list.)

    3. Is it possible to create a segment from a dynamic Marketing List? I tried from a static marketing list and it works perfectly, but from a dynamic marketing list, the members doesn't show in the segment.

[DR]: No. Have a look at the table above.

    Thanks,

    -DD

    Hey Nima 31,

    1. Static Marketing List: The field Subscription is set to False & it is locked when Targeted At = Accounts. I suppose it's because we can target accounts but only contacts can subscribe. Otherwise the field is unlocked. Right?

Correct subscriptions are managed at contact level only

    2. Dynamic Marketing List: The field Subscription is always set to False & locked. Is there any reason for that?

A subscription list is based on a contact choosing to be on that list, not based on attributes about that contact so it would be wrong for a subscription list to be Dynamic. You can add members to a static marketing list using dynamics filters but this is a snapshot in time when you add them to the list, it will not later add new contacts who satisfy the dynamics filter query. You can add this by using the V next to the 'Manage Members' button

    3. Is it possible to create a segment from a dynamic Marketing List? I tried from a static marketing list and it works perfectly, but from a dynamic marketing list, the members doesn't show in the segment.

Not that I'm aware, again its not really the 'right' way to be approaching it. You should rebuild the dynamics marketing list filter query using logical expressions in the segment builder. Now we have segments there isn't really much need/purpose for Dynamics Marketing Lists in this space

    Hope that helps

Thank you very much. Just have another question please. I have a lookup field on contact form, but when I choose that field as a criteria in the query to build a Marketing List, the lookup doesn't show, I have to type the data I am looking for. Is that normal?

    Hi Nima31,

Glad we managed to sort out the first question.

This should normally be a separate thread. Chances are if you are not sure about something, loads of other people around the world have the same question. Separate threads just help the community easily  find the questions that have already been asked/ answered.

On your lookup query, I have just tried creating a Dynamic Marketing list and my lookup fields show with a magnifying glass that lets me search. Does it not look like that for you?

Did you mean segments as opposed to a marketing list?

    Ah, sorry,   @Amey Holden.

We must have posted our comments at the same time.

I didn't mean to be rude and talk over you.

    Hi Dilyana,

Thank for your quick answer. I actually meant Segment. Here a screenshot: The field Account Name is a lookup but it doesn't show:

    Hi @Nima31,

That's fine, that's even easier than marketing lists.

Account Name is a string. Account is a look up - see screenshot.

    Thanks,
