How to set up the capacity in the resources

Dear,

I'm setting up the capacity in the resources so that we can do some schedule. But after reading the info from the technet as the below snapshot, I'm confused. If the AX will consider the work hour according to the calender, how we display the real work time. For example, in we have 5 people in this workshop(resource), they work 8 hours every day, so for this resource, we have 40 hours(5*8) every day, this is our capacity but in the calender, it can't display this info. So, could you help me make sense? Thanks.

    Hi,

    You set capacity against a resource, e.g. Worker 1 = 8 hours a day

Working calendar is the hours in which the resource can work within, e.g. Tuesday = 8 hours, Wednesday = 8 hours.

So for example, if there's an operation that takes 16 hours, Worker 1 will be scheduled to 8 hours on Tuesday, and then complete the job with the available 8 hours on Wednesday.. abiding by the working calendar.

The working calendar is applicable to individual resources, in the example you detailed above there would never be a 40 hour day, but 5 resources with 8 hours of their own working calendar available everyday.

Once scheduled, you can check these capacity load on the resource form.

    I hope this helps

What Thomas explained is spot on. What you've posted a picture of is in reference to lean manufacturing and Work cell capacity. Not taken in to account when working with discrete manufacturing.

You can use that field in discrete if the resource is unit based, so if you have a machine that can produce 500 units an hour you do not worry about time, you set capacity. True usually process, but I would not say it is a lean manufacturing aspect specifically.

Thanks, Thomas, that's clear! Now, I already know the calendar function, but I'm still confused about the capacity measure.

For example, we have a job about the component assembly need 50 hours this week, then we have 5 workers and work 8 hours, so when we schedule this work, these 5 workers will work on this Monday, total working time is 40 hours, in Tuesday, these 5 workers will work 2 hours per worker, then they will be available for next work.

So, how to show this process/info in AX via the capacity in resources? Thanks

I will ignore the capacity field which I explained previously.

In your requirement you would have 5 resources in a resource group. The route would state you need 5 resources to do the work and then the time capacity of the resources would be consumed as you require.

There are two concepts here that are different. The time workers can worker and then the scheduling /consumption of the time.

Thanks, steven. I always get the good explanation from you.

But could you recommend some books or document regarding this? Because a lot of documents just introduce the definition and concept which I find. I want to learn how to implement according to the actual.

I have not read any books to recommend them I am afraid.  I would simply say use the manuals and technet. Then the best way to understand what AX does is to play with the software. Once you understand the options you can then react to the requirements of the customer.
