Importing/updating products regularly

Posted on by 330

I'm looking into GP for my business and from a workflow perspective it looks like it gets the job done.

But i'm not sure about being able to import new products or update product records on a regular basis. My vendors provide weekly product updates. The file will contain changes to products (prices and other data) in addition to new products.

I've been in contact with a reseller suggesting that whatever default tool GP provides would not be adequate for me. They recommended a 3rd party solution called smartconnect which costs more than a 5 client GP license... and I'm probably going to just get a 3 license starter pack...

As you can realize, I'm not really interested in that solution.

Is anyone here using default GP tools to do regularly weekly imports of products? How many records and who fast is it?

If you're using 3rd party which one and why 3rd party over the default offering?

I would need to import 3500 products weekly and each product will have15-20 fields at minimum which would cover stuff like prices dates, units of measure etc. and depending what options are available in GP for additional custom attributes per product maybe more.

Yes. Natarajan is correct. Better you can create a custom Integration for your requirement and add it into window task scheduler to run daily/weekly basis. To create a custom integration, contact any out side vendors.

    Hope this helps!!!

    Hi Zenmasta,

you can create/use a custom integration using eConnect and schedule the integration process based on your wish.

Dynamics GP doesn't specifically have a default tool - it has a toolset which is part of the Customisation Pack which is purchased additional to the 3 User Pack you mentioned.  The Pack is $6,000US (according to the price list I am looking at).

Included in the Customisation Pack is Integration Manager which is what would be seen as the default tool.  This has the ability to import into Item Cards but without knowing the detail of your requirements I couldn't confirm whether it would do what you want.

Integration Manager is an end user tool in that you can use it to set up integrations yourself and run the integrations when you are ready.  Once set up, they usually don't need to be changed much.

For 3,500 items, it would probably take a reasonable amount of time to import 10 - 15 minutes at a guess and depending on what is being updated, you may need to run more than one integration.

The Customisation Pack also has in it all the Modifier tools to enable screens to be modified and the development tools for custom integrations.  The custom integrations probably would require a developer to help you.

I am not familiar with the other integration tools to be able to say how good or otherwise they are.  You do get a six month trial license for Integration Manager when you purchase Dynamics GP so can you try it before you decide whether to commit to some other form of Integration tool.

I will say, while the integration tools seem quite expensive in comparison to the overall product, there is more and more use for integration - whether it is items, customer orders, monthly journals, supplier invoices - having the ability to be connected in some way shape or form is imperative.

If this is the only thing you can see a use for integration for, then looking to pay for a one-off integration to be written is also an option.  I would suggest however, that you will find other uses.

    Cheers

    Heather

There is no doubt that Smart Connect is such a good tool and widely used. Although, there are various ways to consider in order to import data into Dynamics GP; eConnect, Integration Manager and Web Services.

SmartConnect is a developed and out of the shelf product, which you can just buy and get it working. Otherwise, you might need to have the know-how and technical expertise in order to build an integration layer in-house using one of the products above.

I am sure that other community members will have a lot to add up.
