GP 10.0 Crashing in Citrix Environment

Posted on by 610

I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out what is causing GP to crash, and what I really need to know is what is GP doing when I select a company and it says "Loading Personal Settings" as it attempts to log into a company.

Here is the background:

GP 10.0

100 Users using 5 Load Balanced Citrix Server (server 2003).

We have all recently been upgraded to Windows 7 64 Bit

When using GP in "Seamless Window" mode, a user can log into GP, pick a company, then GP Crashes on the "Loading Personal Settings"

The Dexterity event log is never helpful.  It just says the standard "The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Dexterity ) cannot be found. "  So it is not of any use here.

We have so many variables, this does not happen to everybody.  The one thing I have figured out is that some users use an old version of JDE on an AS400 system where we use a IBM Emulator.  I rebuilt the profile of a user and GP was back to normal.  But once she double clicked the AS400 Emulator, it messed with her screen and she was back to strangeness.  I could type for hours on the symptoms, but really was just wondering how to troubleshoot the things that are happening when you select a company and it says "Loading personal Settings"

They don't have invalid shortcuts, favorites, we have deleted GP accounts and re-created them, deleted server profiles, etc... but not of this has worked.

Anyways, if someone knows what is going on there, I can give more information.  I just don't want to bore everyone with all the details...yet.

Seamless window is the setting where it appears that GP is actually on your own computer.  Basically, any windows in GP that you have open show up in the users task bar as if GP was installed locally.  It is the preferred way to deploy GP from servers using Citrix.  In Citrix, you can publish a desktop or just publish an application (very similar to Remote App in Server 2008, same concept).  Published Desktop is just like a remote desktop.  But if you publish just an application, the users can't actually get to the remote computer.  Also with the published application, I can export a smartlist to excel and the server's version of Excel pops up.  But to the user, it just looks like their own Excel.

There are other settings, like 99% of screen size (or any percent), where they basically operate within a Citrix window.  They don't get individual windows in the task bar.  It is just one window and everything is inside it.  It is actually bad to use GP that way because you can minimize, say excel, and then you can't find it.  Plus, it allows users the option to disconnect from their server session and that leaves GP running in the background.  Seamless window doesn't allow that.  The X in the top right is the actual GP close window button.

What is Seamless Mode Kevin? Is this some Citrix setting?

I'll check out that solution, thanks.  However we don't even have that Microsoft.Dynamics.GP.OnlineServices.dll in the add-ins folder.  What is odd is that most people aren't crashing.  And someone who is crashing can log into GP from my computer no problem.  And I can log into their computer (new profile gets created for me), launch Citrix and get into GP no problem.  But when they log into their computer as them, launch citrix then GP, it will crash.  And this ine only in "Seamless window" mode.  That is why I say it is local computer profile related passing things into GP that it doesn't like.  (64 bit vs. 32 bit, something like that).  But we've removed printers out of the mix too and it doesn't make a difference.

have you tried removing and readding the addins in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\gp\AddIns folder? I encountered a few client crashing issues that were resolved when we removed the Microsoft.Dynamics.GP.OnlineServices.dll

The windows user hasn't been re-created.  I just deleted their profile off their local machine and, backed up their My Documents files and had them log back in for a Fresh local computer profile.  Are you sure there isn't more involved in the Loading Personal Settings?  I think it is less a SQL thing than a Windows thing.  Like GP has to load printers from windows at some point, right?  And figure out where to position the window (I have already taken care of this in the Dex.ini so that isn't an issue) My gut feeling is that it is a screen resolution/ video driver thing caused by that IBM emulator on a local computer passing something bad into GP.

So the Dynamics.set paths are all local.  I've even rebuilt the forms and reports dictionaries on all 5 servers.  This isn't server specific, it does happen on all 5 servers.

I can open a support case, but honestly, they never end with a fixed solution, so I figured I would try the forums first and see if anyone has had any of these issues.

If the GP user has been recreated and the Windows user has been recreated then I am not sure what would be going on. When it is loading the personal settings logging into a company that is looking at the SY01400, SY01401, Etc. tables.

I would say try to run a Dexsql.log but I am not sure that is going to be very helpful. You could try the following:

    1. Change the default printer to XPS or something like that before you login.

    2. Point all paths in the Dynamics.set file local.

My gut tells me this is something user specific like reminders, tasks, shortcut, startup but you noted you created a new user and the issue remains.

Sorry wish I could be more help but you may be better off opening a support case on this one.
